The film takes place during the Covid-19 Lockdown. The film starts with a college student Jessica (Jess) talking to her friend on her smartphone, when suddenly she is ambushed and knocked unconscious by an unknown assailant and is taken away. A news report reveals that Jess was found murdered later on and that her killer is still on the loose. From this point forward, the majority of the film takes place from a laptop showing a video conference call between several college friends. Kathleen "Katy" (Kara Royster) organizes a video chat birthday surprise for her best friend Samantha "Sam" (Brielle Barbusca), soon her other friends Adam, Jacob, Jess, Brian, Becca, and Annie all join the video chat to surprise Sam. As soon as she joins they all yell "Surprise" much to her joy, Sam tells them all that she is currently staying over at the parents house for the time being and thanks them for the birthday surprise. After some time, Sam tells them that she needs to take of something and walks off screen while still leaving her computer and webcam on. However, as time passes her friends grow concerned as she still hasn't returned to her computer, Brian figures out that Sam had been lying to them about being over at her parents house. As the background on her video chat is fake, Brian proves this by changing his background to match the one Sam had, this causes them to wonder why she lied to them in the first place. After some time, Jacob (Jack Griffo) decides to go over to Sam's house and see if she is okay. He joins the video chat from his smartphone to show everyone what's happening, after arriving he enters her house and is seemingly attacked until he reveals it to be a prank. But suddenly Jacob's phone starts shaking and falls to the floor, at first the gang believes it to be another prank but they become uneasy after he does not respond and his phone is still recording while on the ground. Jacob's girlfriend Becca (Ashley Argota Torres) becomes concerned and decides to head over to look for him, she also joins the video chat from her smartphone. Becca looks around Sam's house but doesn't find anyone, she dials Sam's number and finds her smartphone on the top of her stairs. But soon she hears someone else in the house and hides in the bathtub, but the unknown assailant finds and takes her. Becca's smartphone shows the assailant turning on the faucet in the bathtub, which puts the phone underwater and eventually causes it to short out, cutting off the video chat. The remainder of the group wonder if this is some elaborate prank, but are unsure who could be responsible for this. Eventually, one of their other friends Robert (Kenny Ridwan) joins the video chat, he reveals that he came to wish Sam a happy birthday. But they all believe that Robert was responsible for their friends going missing, but he annoyed by them hounding him leaves the video chat. Katy messages him privately and asks him if he took their friends, but he says he didn't and proves it by sending Katy his location map data. Having enough, Annie decides to go over to Sam's house and investigate for herself. She arrives and finds the computer that Sam was using to video chat with them. Katy, Brian, and Adam all start talking over one another telling Annie what to do, but she becomes annoyed and mutes all of them. But when she removes the fake background from Sam's video chat, the others see the unknown assailant behind her, they all try to warn Annie but are unable to and can only watch as she is ambushed and knocked unconscious. The assailant briefly stares at the camera before disconnecting from the video chat. The group wonder what to do, they try to contact the authorities but the police do not take them seriously. Katy then notices that Annie had sent her a message with an unknown phone number before she was attacked by the unknown assailant. She does not recognize the number and cannot match it to her contact list, she sends the number to Brian. He searches for the owner of the phone number and eventually finds the person on a social networking website. The person is revealed to be Justin Anderson, Brian looks through his social media page but finds no information about him except his name. Katy feels like she had seen him before, she asks Brian to go over the recording of their video chat, and sees that Sam had been dating Justin as she showed them photos of him. They see that one of the photos he sent her matches the outfit the assailant was wearing and realizes that he was responsible for their friends disappearing. Suddenly, someone else joins the video chat, it is revealed to be Jacob and Becca who regained consciousness and are trapped inside some sort of closet. But Sam isn't with them, they realize that Justin must have taken her to his house and use the photos that he sent to Sam to find where he lives. Adam heads out to find Sam, while Brian and Katy work together to locate where Justin lives using his photos. They find his house and tells Adam his address, while Katy sees a news article about Jessica and realizes that Justin is the murderer and heads to Sam's house to help Jacob and the others. Adam breaks into Justin's house and finds Sam restrained but alive, he frees her and together they head over to help Katy and the others while still video chatting from their phones. Katy arrives at Sam's house and eventually finds the closet where Jacob, Becca, and Annie were being held in. Katy frees them and they attempt to flee, unfortunately Justin arrives and locks the door before Katy could escape, leaving her alone with him. While still video chatting, everyone else tries to help Katy but cannot open or break down the door. Katy confronts Justin and accuses him of killing Jessica (the girl from the beginning of the film) by luring her from a dating app and how he tried to do the same with Sam. Justin does not deny the accusation, while Katy tries to calm him down. Katy tries to reason with Justin, but he lunges at her while she runs into the kitchen and grabs a knife before the battery on her laptop dies and the video chat cuts off. Some time later, Katy is shown logging into her laptop and reading messages from her concerned friends who heard about her ordeal, revealing that she had managed to survive. She also pulls up a news video revealing that Justin had been arrested for killing Jessica and for also kidnapping her friends. Katy and her friends throw Sam another video chat birthday, this time she is shown with Katy in her house. Everyone wishes her a happy birthday and tells her to open her present, while she does Katy contemplates everything that had happened and stares at the camera and the screen fades to black.
