Above Suspicion
A young, success-driven fresh-out-of-the academy F.B.I. Agent Mark Putnam (Jack Huston) is sent to Pikeville, a beleaguered mining town in rural Kentucky. Pikeville is nestled in the middle of mountains and has a really picturesque setting. Due to the shut down of the mines, there are no jobs in the area and the people who can leave are opting for better opportunities outside. As his first assignment, Mark is asked to investigate a local chop-shop ring and various other illegal activities. He has transferred with his wife Kathy (Sophie Lowe). Mark and Kathy had a child together. Once ensconced in his work, Putnam gets way too involved with a local down-on-her-luck local woman Susan Smith (Emilia Clarke) who becomes his star informant. Susan is well integrated into the local community and knows everybody in the small town. Susan is divorced from ex-husband Cash (Johnny Knoxville) and has 2 kids with him. She is involved in the drugs distribution business in the town as she has no other options to help her pay the bills. Funeral and drug distribution are the only businesses in town that still make some money. Some people resorted to desperate measures such as trying to rob the rural bank, but in most cases the plan failed due to the alertness of local sheriff Randy. Cash still stays with Susan and Susan has also taken on a few paying guests in her home to earn some extra money. Cash and Susan's brother Bones (Luke Spencer Roberts) help her run night parties where customers can buy and smoke drugs. At one of the parties, one customer starts fighting with Bones, who ends up shooting him. Bones escapes from the scene of the shooting but later comes back to Susan's house where Cash gives him some drugs to calm down. Randy and Mark chase down the truck which was used by the robber in the heist thwarted by Randy. The truck had no license plates and they both were not able to have a good look at the driver, who abandoned the truck and escaped into the jungle shooting at Mark to prevent him from following. Mark teams up with local Sheriff Randy McCoy (Austin Hebert) to arrest Bones at Susan's house and even uncovers 1000 tablets of the drug Percocet. Susan advises Cash to turn informant to cut a deal with Mark. Mark quickly realizes that Susan is the brains behind the operation. Under advice from Susan, Cash refuses to say anything until he gets a deal in writing from Mark. Susan had sent her kids to her sisters home out of state. But she finds that child services had reached them there, and she suspects Mark to be behind this. Cash negotiates a steady salary, the end of his probationary period with the law, and a bonus payment for testifying in the case. Cash also says that he wants to be in witness protection if he testifies. Mark knows that Cash is demanding quite a lot and says that all of this will take time to arrange. Mark says that he will only discuss the terms with Susan. Mark had a knack of being able to befriend the locals. Under the guise of trying to cut a deal for Cash, Mark starts seeing Susan regularly. Mark wants Susan to tell him about Cash's customers, so he can apprehend them while they commit some other crime in the area. Susan knows that she is taking a big risk talking to Mark, but she believes that due to her deep ties to Cash, she would not be considered to be the source of the leak. Susan says that if she is ever discovered, her house would be burned down as a warning and her tongue would be cut off by the locals to make an example of her.
