American Girl
Rena is pregnant. Her brother Jay is possibly Gay. Her half-sister Barbie seems to disappear a lot. And her mom, Madge is devoted to Rena's callous, imprisoned father, John. In one day, all sorts of issues in the Grubb family come to a head at the yearly Prison family picnic day. John is roughly accusing his son of being a pansy-then sends him off with a guy who pretty much will ensure that Jay will decide whether he is Gay or Straight. The awful truth of where Barbie disappears too is revealed when it seems odd that all the prison guards know her-eventually a tryst with John (her Step-Father-no blood relation) is discovered by Jay. And by the end of the day, Rena won't be pregnant anymore, thanks to her father slamming into her and knocking her to the ground during a scuffle with Jay. Rena used to miss her father, imagining him reading to her, then after this horrible day realizes her father is nothing she thought he was-a loser who is far more interested in playing touch football with prison buddies than actually enjoying his family being there for the day. But despite John, the Grubbs have each other, and by days end-they know how to be there without John and can do something John has previously prevented-moving forward.
