Atomic Apocalypse
Present Day - On a beautiful sunlit California beach, Kate and her husband Sam enjoy a magical day with their 22 year old daughter Suzi. Suddenly, a blinding flash of light draws their attention. Just before a devastating boom that shakes the earth, they look up to see huge nuclear mushroom clouds spreading in the distance. Flash forward nearly two years into the future. Pursued by Scum Raiders who just plundered the family's secret hideaway, Kate, Sam and Suzi flee through the forest in search of safety. Sam gets shot trying to protect Suzi, and the family must battle to survive, or perish like millions of others. Is there even an Eden left to be found in this hostile new world? Black Flowers is a road trip of epic proportions; a hopeful tale set in dark times about the relationships in our lives, how we react to crisis, and how these reactions are shaped over time by the people and world around us. Without gasoline, electricity, and communications and with bullets as rare as clean water, our family learns the gravest threats can come from within. They accidentally injure a stranger, Joe, while hunting for food. He has a map to a hidden bunker called Salvation. The family decides to join him in the search for it, hoping for safety and medical supplies. However within a few short days Kate finds herself violently ripped from her husband and daughter; forced to traverse this hellish land alone. Nearly lost to insanity in a world of darkness both mental and physical, Kate takes a chance and joins a group of people living unafraid and even joyously amidst the ruins - the Apocalypse Party People led by the Bob Marley-esque DJ Apocalypso (William Mark McCullough). Kate finally catches a break when their music and revelry draws in a wandering Suzi as well, and mother and daughter are reunited. Yet it soon becomes clear to Kate that DJ and his merry band are just obliterating themselves with booze and drugs as they wait for the world to end and to die. With renewed resolve, Kate drags Suzi back on the road to find a life worth living. But the constant threat of the Scum Raiders push their resolve so far that it crumbles into despair. None of us can make this world what we'd like it to be all-alone. It takes community and the good people Kate has met along the way to help her and Suzi find hope again within themselves, take charge, and build that brave new world together.
