Beneath Beauty
Amidst floating clouds and pretty little mountains, exists a land that looks like a dream heaven, inhabited by a glorious race, born from the darkness of violence & bloodshed in their homes. They fought many wars, some for the nation, some for their tribe, some for freedom and some for peace. Killing the enemy and taking home the head was their glory and their pride. This is the story of a tribe called Nagas; this is a story of a place called Nagaland. The Nagas have fought many battles, resisting the mighty British, to stopping the Japanese invasion of India in the great battle of Kohima. But with heavy and brave hearts, they saw their motherland besieged by violence and bloodshed. Until one day they woke up to the pain they felt inside, as they slept to death and woke up to life. With the dawn of Christianity, they moved from darkness to light. The Nagas immersed themselves in Mother Nature, working lush paddy fields, communing with spirits, talking to the trees, the mountains, and the forests. They sang songs season after season. They sang songs when they harvested rice, they sang songs when they saw life, they sang when they were happy, they sang when they were in pain. They sang songs in the mountains, until the mountains echoed and gave them peace, love and light. Headhunting to Beatboxing is a musical document that traverses the story of a tribe in the far North East of India, a state called Nagaland and its complex violent history, highlighting the transformative impact of music in channeling the energies of its youth away from violence towards collaborative artistic endeavours. A stunning visual canvas that encapsulates this unique & surreal geography of India and intricately weaves together the diverse musical tapestry of Nagaland's tribes, showcasing the richness and vibrancy of their musical dna. Through a lens of introspection and celebration, the film captures the indomitable spirit of Nagaland's people as they harness the power of music to transcend the shadows of a bygone era. As the film unfolds, it becomes evident that music has become more than just a form of artistic expression - it is a force for healing, transformation and oneness. The film celebrates the spirit of humanity and her potential for progressive transformation with a story resurrected in blood, tears and melodies. It journeys through the magnificent land to document stories and songs as it showcases the evolution of Nagaland's musical renaissance, straddling across genres of folk music, folk fusion, classical, contemporary, hip hop, electronic & folkwave with musicians, bands, groups and orchestras nestled across the landscape.
