Amid the widespread fear of AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), best friends Stacy Hunter (Lea Thompson) and Melissa Halpern (Victoria Jackson) are nervous about being sexually active single women in 1980s Los Angeles, California. Stacy, who has always been interested in sex, lost her virginity in high school before initiating a series of passionate affairs with struggling musicians and artists, many of whom were complete strangers. Melissa, however, remained intimidated by sex until her sophomore year in college, when she persuaded her closest male friend to sleep with her. After a brief, unhappy engagement to a boorish fiance, Melissa yearns to lose her inhibitions around men. Stacy, however, regrets her past promiscuity and takes a vow of celibacy.
