Kabir Khan, the coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey Team, dreams of making his all-girls team emerge victorious against all odds. Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) knows what it's like to come back from the dead. The ex Indian Captain has now come back in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey team. A team that exists more on paper and less in reality. The team is a rag-tag bunch of girls with their own agenda. A bunch of girls who have forgotten what it is like to play for the love of the game. Of playing because you want glory for your country. Not because you want a pensioned job or a government flat. They have all forgotten the sharp thrill of just holding the hockey stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth. The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. Kabir Khan is termed a traitor after loosing a match to rival Pakistan he goes on missing for years, seven years later he resurfaces to take up the job of coach for Indian women hockey team which the association believes is of no use.Kabir takes charge of sixteen member team which is divided in between competitive,district and seniority but Kabir's aim is that we are not playing for any of these but India. The team isn't happy with his tough coaching and strict discipline and want to sack him finally he resigns.During Kabir's farewell the women get in scuffle with men trying to get smart with the team and bash them badly and Kabir sees his team unity.The team accepts their mistake and ask him to remain their coach now Kabir's only aim is to take the team to World Cup in Australia. In Delhi during the final minutes of a Hockey World Cup match between Pakistan and India, with Pakistan leading, 1-0. The Indian team captain, Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) is fouled, and he elects to take the penalty stroke himself. His strike, however, flies just above the goal and India suffers a crushing defeat. Uttam Singh (Mohit Chauhan) is Kabir's team member in the squad. Soon after the match ends, the media begins to circulate a photograph of Khan accepting a handshake from the captain of the Pakistan team after the match. This action leads to a nation-wide smear campaign which alleged that Khan (who is a Muslim) might have "thrown" the game in an act of sympathy towards Pakistan. The religious prejudice exhibited towards Khan by the entire society at large forces him and his mother (Joyoshree Arora) out of their ancestral home and into exile. Kabir is desolate to see that his house had been marked as one of a "traitor" by his neighbors as he leaves with a heavy heart. Seven years later, Mr. Tripathi (Anjan Srivastav), the head of India's Hockey association, meets with Khan's friend and field hockey advocate Uttam Ji, to discuss the Indian women's hockey team. Tripathi argues the team has no future since, the only long-term role for women is to do housework. Uttam says that the women's hockey world cup is only 3 months away and the team cannot be sent to a world class competition without any preparation. Tripathi asks Uttam to become the coach and use the world cup to get an official trip with his family. Uttam refuses and Tripathi says that it will be impossible to find a coach for the team with no prospects. Uttam, however, informs him that Kabir Khan (whom no one has seen for seven years) wants to coach the team. Though initially skeptical, Tripathi ultimately agrees to this arrangement. Uttam had prepared a list of the top 16 female hockey players from all over India. Khan thus finds himself in charge of a group of 16 young women from various sections of India, who are divided by their own competitive natures and individual prejudices. Khan's first challenge is to get them to lose their state identities and to make them realize that they are playing for their country, India. While Komal Chautala (Chitrashi Rawat) from Haryana who is battling her patriarchal family, conflicts with Preeti Sabarwal (Sagarika Ghatge) from Chandigarh, Balbir Kaur (Tanya Abrol) from Punjab has an extremely short temper and bullies Rani Dispotta (Seema Azmi) and Soimoi Kerketa (Nisha Nair), belonging to the remote villages in Jharkhand. Mary Ralte (Kimi Laldawla) from Mizoram and Molly Zimik (Masochon "Chon Chon" Zimik) from Manipur are both treated as "foreigners" by virtually everyone they meet and face repeated sexual harassment. Gul Iqbal (Arya Menon) comes from an illustrious family of hockey players and has a lot of pressure on her to carry the legacy forward. Nethra Reddy (Sandia Furtado) is a south Indian and is called "Madrasi", even though she is from Andhra. The team's captain, Vidya Sharma (Vidya Malvade), is forced to choose between hockey and the wishes of her husband Rakesh's (Nakul Vaid) family as they want a traditional daughter-in-law and kids, while she wants a career in hockey, while Preeti's fiance, Abhimanyu Singh (Vivan Bhatena), the vice-captain of the India national cricket team, is deeply threatened by her involvement with the team. Abhimanyu wants Preeti to give up hockey and only live her life as his wife. Abhimanyu says that hockey is not a career and rather "just a game". Khan reprimands Preeti for coming late to the registration process and makes it clear that he wants the players to behave like members of the Indian Hockey Team. Vidya tells Khan that her in-laws allow her to play hockey occasionally as her sports quota helped her get a government job and a free accommodation in government quarters. Khan realizes that he can only unite the girls if they develop the discipline to work as a team. This leads him to have his assistant Krishnaji (Vibha Chhibber) bench a number of players during the first few days, including the most experienced player, Bindiya Naik (Shilpa Shukla). Bindiya is used to play at the center forward position, but Kabir assigns her a new spot on the team, which angers her. Some of the players including Komal and Balbir see the error of their ways, apologize to Kabir and agree to play as per his instructions on the field. From the very beginning Preeti and Komal don't pass the ball to each other during games. Eventually Bindiya and her followers Aliya and Gunjan also apologize and join the team. Kabir starts pushing the team extremely hard in training. Kabir yells at the girls for minor mistakes and is relentless. Kabir admonishes Preeti for her failure to pass the ball forward and rather hanging on to it. He insults Balbir that her temper is everywhere except on the field. Kabir even confronts Bindiya of not being a team player and says that each team can have only one alpha and that he is the alpha for this team. Due to Kabir's strenuous regime, one girl faints from exhaustion. In response to Kabir, Bindiya engineers a revolt. Bindiya alleges that Kabir was not loyal to his own country when he threw the World Cup Final against Pakistan. Bindiya says that if Kabir is not confronted right then, he is only likely to get worse and the team would have to bear the brunt. Bindiya gets her followers Aliya (Anaitha Nair) and Gunjan Lakhani (Shubhi Mehta) to also join her in her protests against Kabir. Bindiya leads a strike against Kabir and takes her complaint to the sports association. She forces all the players to sign the complaint against Kabir. This leads to Kabir resigning from his post. Kabir says that he is disappointed that he lost to his country, who is not convinced of his loyalty despite his blood and sweat. Kabir vows to continue working for the benefit of Indian Hockey. As a gesture of good will, Khan, however, invites Krishnaji, the team manager Sukhlal (Javed Khan), and the girls to a farewell lunch. During the lunch, local boys eve tease Mary. Balbir attacks them, triggering a brawl between the boys and the team. Khan, recognizing that they are finally acting as one for the first time, prevents the staff from intervening and he only stops a man from hitting one of the women from behind with a cricket bat. The quarrel, however, unites the girls and destroys their anger towards Khan. After the fight, the women realize Khan's intentions and ask him to remain their coach. Khan, impressed by the display of their team spirit, eventually agrees and further trains them on various aspects. This time the girls participate in all the drills with high energy and determination. Kabir also designs various plays for the team to be used against their opponents to score goals. Kabir assigns Vidya as the captain of the team. Abhimanyu speaks to Preeti's parents and agrees on a wedding date without asking Preeti. But Preeti refuses and says that she is going to the world cup. Abhimanyu retorts that regardless of whether Preeti wins or looses the world cup, nobody in India will care. Khan, however, forces him to agree to a challenge match with the men's team on condition that if the girls win, they will be allowed to go to Australia. Although Khan's team loses 3-2 but they earn the respect of their male counterparts on the field who give them a standing salute. Their performance inspires Tripathi to send them to Australia after all. Bindiya is upset with Khan for choosing Vidya over her as the captain of the team. Her consequent behavior on the field results in a 7-0 loss in their first match with Australia. When Khan confronts Bindiya about her actions on the field, Bindiya responds by attempting to seduce Khan, which he rejects & asks her to stay away from the game. Khan goes on to train the girls again, which is followed by victories over England, Spain, South Africa, New Zealand, and Argentina. Just before their game with South Korea, Khan approaches Bindiya, asking her to begin playing once more and break the strategy of 'person to person' marking used by the Korean team so they can win the match. Bindiya goes onto the field and with the help of Gunjan Lakhani manages to beat South Korea and enter the finals. They are again matched with Australia for the final. Khan urges Komal and Preeti to put aside their differences for the team's sake. Preeti, in order to prove Abhimanyu a point, is determined to finish as the tournament's leading goal scorer. Throughout the tournament Komal has not made a pass to Preeti and the Australians are well aware of this. In the final few minutes of the game, the Indian women are trailing 1-2, and Komal is surrounded by the Australian players while she has the ball. Komal decides to pass the ball to Preeti, who scores and pushes the game into penalty shootouts. There, they go down 2-0 initially but come back due to Vidya's efforts to win the penalty shootouts 3-2 and thus claim the world cup against all odds. When the team returns home, their families treat them with greater respect and Khan, his good name restored, returns with his mother to their town and ancestral home.
