Dr. Nancy Love (Genevieve Bujold) is a popular radio sex therapist living in Los Angeles. Because she refuses to talk about herself, her listeners don't realize she has no sex life of her own. (Nor does she want one.) A woman named Eve (Lesley Ann Warren) frequently calls her for advice, using different names. Eve is actually a former streetwalker who recently bought a bar that is named 'Eve's' and that she has been having an affair for the past three years with a wealthy, married tough guy named Zack Antoine (Patrich Bauchau). Billy Ace (John Larroquette) is Eve's bar aide who keeps after her. Eve has seen so many relationships fail that she can't commit herself to any man, even though she would love marriage. Yet, she can't resist men. One evening, a young man named Mickey DeLeon (Keith Carradine) arrives at Eve's Lounge for a drink where he meets Eve for the first time. He loved the first Eve in which the second 'Eve' tells him that Eve #1 committed suicide by shooting herself over a man. (Mickey have have already known about this, but it is never confirmed.) Eve and Mickey are immediately attracted to each other, but she tries to resist him. At the bar, Mickey meets a young woman named Pearl (Rae Dawn Chong) who is giving Eve a hart time for reasons that Eve cannot fathom. When Mickey asks Pearl why she is so hard on Eve, Pearl tells him that she is keeping an eye on Eve because she knows that Eve is having an affair with her husband Zack. Mickey tells Pearl that he never lies, but he is actually a pathological liar. He says to Eve that that he was married twice, escaped from a mental hospital, taught poetry at Yale University, and was a prize-winning photographer. In time, he reveals that he was jet pilot and a spy in Germany and Russia. Using the false name of 'Ann', Nancy moves in with Eve and becomes her roommate. She says that she runs an answering service for a living. Nancy doesn't know that Eve is a frequent caller to her Dr. Love radio program, and Eve doesn't realize that 'Ann' is actually Dr. Nancy Love. Later, when Eve calls Dr. Love at the radio station, she mentions Mickey, the new man in her life. She doesn't trust him, but is attracted to him. She worries that Mickey is attracted to Pearl. Mickey wins a lot of money from Zack playing cards. Upset at loosing a lot of his money, Zack tells Mickey that he doesn't want to see his face ever again. Mickey then goes over to Pearl's apartment and takes pictures of her while she sleeps, but they do not sleep together. Zack finds them together and threatens Mickey with a gun. He punches Pearl, giving her a black eye. Mickey flees to Eve's house where 'Ann' is there. While he bathes, she looks at his scrapbook... and it turns out that he really was all those things he said he was. Mickey seduces Ann/Nancy but she turns down his proposal. Before she was on the verge of mental breakdown; now she is sexually liberated. She turns him down. Back on the air at her radio program, Dr. Nancy Love now openly discusses sex, the thrill of giving in to sexual impulses. Nancy begins to dress sexually. When Pearl shows up at Eve's with a black eye and yells at her, Eve mistakenly assumes that Pearl was beaten by Mickey. In Eve's car, she ties to push Mickey away, but as before, he draws her into his arms. Just then, Zack appears, pulls Mickey out of the car and tries to beat him up for sleeping with his wife. Hearing this, Eve is further convinced that Mickey has been unfaithful. Eve drives home alone. When she arrives, 'Ann' admits that she was the one who slept with Mickey and wants to share him with her. This is the last straw with Eve who decides to move out. Mickey arrives just after Eve has left her house. So does Zack minutes later, Previously, Zack had phoned Eve in which 'Ann' answered the phone and given him excellent advice about his relationships. He wanted to speak to 'Ann' again and is furious to see Mickey with her too. Mickey and Zack have another fistfight and Mickey flees with Zack's gun. Mickey finds Eve on a rooftop. She threatens to shoot herself, but when he puts a gun to his own head also, she runs into his arms. They make love right there on the rooftop. Eve tells Mickey that she will put her faith in him. Mickey and Eve drive to Las Vegas where they have a quickie wedding and decide to stay there for their honeymoon.
