Clash of Colors: LA Riots of 1992
Story of a Village is a feature documentary about one woman's journey to help a village in Sierra Leone recover after years of civil war. Sierra Leone is a country that like many in Africa, trying to recover from great devastation that resulted from a civil war. Like other countries, Sierra Leone has been afforded the opportunity to receive help from sources outside of the continent. Unfortunately, there are villages in these countries that fall between the cracks. No matter how big the celebrity, no matter how dire the perils are publicized, there villages are virtually invisible to the world. "Story of a Village" is a portrait of Tiffany Persons, a woman unknown to most of the world but a hero to the village of Bongema. This film tells a story about a woman who isn't famous or wealthy but has dedicated her life to a cause that to most seems hopeless. Sierra Leone is the size of North Carolina and the entire country is run on gas-powered generators. Bongema is a village that is so obscure it can only be accessed through one narrow road that extends for miles through diamond mines before entering the village.. What is even more astounding ,Tiffany Persons discovered this village on an excursion that did not involve what is now her life's work. When Tiffany stumbles upon Bongema village she realizes education is a powerful weapon needed to liberate this village and others from the on going despair in Africa. It is hard for one to visualize that a place exists where the people have never seen a television. A place where most of the children have never seen a book. Through Tiffany's eyes we meet a village of children who have dreams and aspirations that mirror those of our children in America. As we watch what seems to be a hopeless situation unfold, we bear witness to a women sacrificing herself to build a school when so many odds are stacked against her. Tiffany's compelling narrative of strength and self discovery inspires and encourages the multitude. Tiffany's story is one that testifies the true meaning of a hero. By the end of this journey one realizes there is no end. There is only the understanding that there is no reward without renunciation. Tiffany Persons is willing to pay that price.
