Dangerous Desires
The documentary Colis Suspect, explores the social and economic implications of the so- called 'refugee crisis.' The film also considers the consequences of an unresolved post-colonial global scenario and signals which companies are taking advantage of the inequality between first and third world countries. What role do European member states play in the conflicts that refugees ran away from? Which are the main companies exporting guns from the European Union? Who is making billions out of the 'security' business? What is their influence in border policy? When, and why, did the fight against terrorism and irregular immigration merge one with another? Colis Suspect (meaning Suspicious Package in French), wants to answer the following question: What's behind Europe's Fortress? The documentary, mainly shot in France, focuses on the EU system of borders and migration, as well as the persuasion and influence of the security industry lobby. The film counts with ten interviews with experts in law, migration, security, defense industry and international relations. In addition, our analysis is articulated together with the story of Mohammed, a poet and activist for the rights of the undocumented and a refugee from Sudan living in Paris. The documentary explores how the idea of security has been reformulated in the current context of economic crisis and terrorist alert. Why is Europe fortified? What does it affect and who does it benefit?
