70-year old Brandner Kaspar lives with his granddaughter Nannerl in the mountains at the Schliersee. As he is visited by the Death and wants to take him, Brandner Kaspar tricks him and gets another 20 years of life. On the idyllic Schliersee lake in the 19th century: Brandner Kaspar, a notorious poacher, is terrorizing the area. His bitter enemies, Mayor Kugler and his gendarmes, have never been able to prove anything against the old fox. But when Brandner is grazed by a bullet and lies wounded in his hut, it seems that his time has finally come. With thunder and lightning, a pale, black-robed creature enters his living room uninvited: it is the Grim Reaper, who has come to take Kaspar away. But he has no intention of dying and tempts the grumpy reaper into a lively game of cards, in which he cheats his way to another 20 years of life with marked cards. While Death has to justify his mistake to Saint Peter and the heavenly bureaucracy, Brandner Kaspar enjoys his life to the full. But when his pretty granddaughter Nannerl dies in a hunting accident, the blessing turns out to be a curse. Now Death senses his chance and grants Kaspar a trial glimpse into the white-and-blue paradise. However, due to his long list of sins, Brandner Kaspar faces many years in purgatory. Then the old rascal unexpectedly receives help from above. —BR
