A three-star Michelin chef, Roshan Kalra (Saif Ali Khan) gets fired from his job in New York because he punches a customer at the restaurant. The customer had said that the food was not as good as it used to be. Roshan was brought up in Delhi and fell in love with food in the streets of Chandni Chowk. Roshan's father (Ramgopal Bajaj) was not supportive of his love for food or his stated intention of becoming a chef. Roshan ran away from home when he was 15 and since then his father refused to acknowledge him as his son. Roshan is now divorced from his wife and they have son named Armaan. His ex-wife Radha implores Roshan not to ignore Armaan, but Roshan is not able to give much time to him. Roshan is jailed for his assault and the owner of the restaurant, Sunil (Pawan Chopra), has to come by to bail him out. Sunil tells Roshan to take a break, after Roshan says that he intends to keep a closer eye on the line cooks to make sure that the quality of their food is maintained. Vinnie (Sobhita Dhulipala) is Roshan's Sous Chef at the kitchen. Roshan goes back to the kitchen and berates his staff for not following his instructions and serving substandard food. Sunil comes by and formally fires Roshan from his job. Sunil says that Roshan's ideas about food are now stale and that he needs fresh inspiration. Roshan threatens to take the entire staff with him, but Vinnie refuses to leave and hence Roshan has to leave alone. Vinnie is also Roshan's friend and meets him at home that night. Vinnie tells Roshan that he has lost his passion for cooking and is just going through the motions. Vinnie encourages Roshan to spend time with his son back in India. She says that his fame as a Michelin star chef would count for nothing, if he does not have a good relationship with his own son. Roshan then flies to Kochi to spend some time with his son Armaan (Svar Kamble) who lives with his ex-wife Radha Menon (Padmapriya). Radha teaches a dance class at her humble home to support herself and her son. Roshan's line cook Nazrool is also Radha's good friend. Nazrool calls Radha and in talking he reveals that Roshan was fired from his job by Sunil. Radha is a little disappointed that Roshan came not to spend time with his son, but because he had nothing else to do. Radha does not confront Roshan, but gently nudges him to spend more time with Armaan on his trip. Roshan had come to Kochi with the idea of spending a few days but ends up spending more time with his ex-wife and son. Radha is seeing Biju (Milind Soman) but doesn't specify the nature of her relationship with Biju to Roshan. Radha has to go on a dance tour trip and wants Roshan to take care of Armaan while she is away. Turns out Armaan is a foodie and takes Roshan for a Idiyappam in Kochi. Roshan and Armaan leave Kochi for a trip. Roshan and Araman spend a few days together as Roshan takes him to Chandni Chowk (Chole Bhature) and Golden temple (Langar food) and tells him about how Roshan himself fell in love with food. He tells Armaan that after running away from home, he spent a few days with Ram Lal of the Chole Bhature shop to take his first lessons in cooking. They even go to meet Roshan's father (Ram Gopal Bajaj) who was not very enthusiastic about Roshan's career as a chef. Roshan's father blames him for breaking 2 homes with the insistence to follow his cooking dream. Roshan takes Armaan to the local restaurants where he first started cooking. At a Dhaba, Roshan realizes that they have stopped serving a tomato chutney after their cook left. Roshan introduces himself to the current owner and says that he wants to serve the famous tomato chutney to his son. The owner allows Roshan to cook the chutney the traditional way in the Dhaba kitchen. When Radha gets to know he's been thrown out of his job, she suggests him to come up with his own food truck. Her good friend Biju (Milind Soman) offers his rundown double-Decker minibus. At first Roshan is very insulted by the idea as he considers himself a professional chef with a steady paycheck, but very slowly warms up to it. Radha and Roshan remember how at first Roshan's passion for food also reflected in his passion for her, but the passion faded as the love for food went away and led to their divorce. Armaan and Roshan start cleaning up and outfitting the double Decker bus, when Nuzroon (Chandan Roy Sanyal) an ex-colleague of Roshan from NYC joins him in Kochi to be part of his journey. Roshan makes Armaan do all the difficult jobs as well, including bagging and throwing a dead rat from the top deck of the bus. Nuzroon hires Alex Oomen (Dinesh Prabhakar) as the driver and finally the crew and bus is ready. Roshan christens it "Raasta Cafe". Alex has a national permit and used to drive the state transport buses earlier. Radha advises Roshan to serve Indian street food on his food truck. Roshan tests his food truck in Kochi and attracts a lot of foreign tourists. He decides to tour India with his food truck. Armaan tags along with him. On their way to Delhi, they stop at various cities in Kerala and Goa. Armaan Tweets the pictures at every stop and builds up a social media following. Predictably, Roshan and Armaan bond on the road trip and Roshan trains him to be an amateur chef. Roshan starts getting chef offers back in New York, while he is still on the way to Delhi. Roshan is all set to return to NYC when he gets to Delhi. He calls Radha to come to Delhi to pick Armaan. Armaan is very angry that Roshan is abandoning him. When Armaan leaves with Radha, Roshan realizes his mistake and begs them to stay. They set up their food truck in Connaught place and run a successful business.
