The life of a young man, son of an English officer who lets himself become a prisoner of love resulting in fatalism and disgrace. Portugal, in the 1850s. The writer Camilo Castelo Branco and his friend José Augusto fall in love with the two daughters of an English officer, Marie and Fanny "Francisca" Owen. However, their respective preferences do not match those of the ladies, as Fanny only has eyes for José Augusto, while Camilo desires her.
