In June 1980, a teen girl, Beth Easton, and her widowed mother. Kate moved from Los Angeles, California to Wheaton, Washington, where they move into Kate's farmhouse. Beth is not happy that they have a TV with only two channels and they don't work. She is sad that she misses the city and does not like her new surroundings in the town that she goes to but then she meets Jody Salerno, a free spirited teen girl who has a bad reputation. When Beth is riding her bike, she accidentally gets forced off the road by a truck and goes down a steep ravine and crashes her bike into a river along with Jody. Beth's mom tries to get Beth to become friends with two other local girls named Tracy and Samantha, they are picking berries outside the house Jody , who is hiding in a tree, throws cherries at both of them. Tracy and Samantha warn Beth about Jody, saying that she's bad news, but Beth joins Jody on a hike through the woods. Jody and Beth come to a cliff with a hanging rope, Jody swings to the other side and eventually gets Beth to as well. Beth ties her shoes the next day and tells her mom she is going to see Jody. Beth and Jody meet Jody's mom and her boyfriend, Ray, who charms them. While walking along the trail, Jody asks Beth if she has ever seen a guy naked and she says no. Eventually, Jody tells Beth that she has a great adventure planed for them the next day, because of the summer solstice. Jody tells Beth where to meet her and Beth does at that time, but Jody doesn't show up so the local sheriff, Matt, takes Beth to her house. Jody's mom, Lynette answers the door who is drunk and shaken that Beth asked for Jody and tells her that she is not home. Matt brings Beth back to her house and she finds out that the sheriff is an acquaintance of her moms. Beth gets a phone call from Jody, who sends her off into the forest outside the house and explains that she had to hide from the sheriff and Beth because she had broken into a vending machine in the local high school and stole some of the candy. They board a motorized boat. Jody tells Beth the story of Molly Morgan, a girl who was killed in a mine collapse in Bear Mountain while looking for gold. They go down stream and they eventually come to Bear Mountain. Beth finds out that Jody has set up a makeshift living space in the cave and she finds out about Jody's bandaged shoulder and then she tells Beth that her mom's boyfriend Ray, had gotten drunk and into a fight with her the night before and then Jody killed him with a fishing pole. Beth tells Joey to go to the police, but she doesn't and she plans to instead hide out in the mountain. As the rain storm approaches, Beth and Jody want to leave the mountain but a rock collapse gets the boat damaged and Beth is pinned to the floor. Jody decided to swim out of the cave and down the river and she makes it past a grizzly bear and then she goes to a road where she meets a state trooper and is rescued. Beth gets rescued just in time by some helpers and is sent to the hospital. Jody gets confronted by Ray and is surprised that he's still alive. Kate does not allow Beth to spend time with Jody anymore, but she does come to the Fourth of July picnic and has a plan to go back to the mountain to find the gold. Kate sees Jody with Beth and allows her to see her again and they drive to her house the next day, but are shocked to find out that the house is trashed and the Jody's mom has beaten and unconscious, with Ray no where to be found. Lynette gets taken to the hospital, and Beth tells the sheriff, Matt that they have to go the mountain because Ray took Jody there. Beth goes with the sheriff once inside the cave, they get separated inside. Beth finds Jody and she tells Beth that Ray is drunk and that he beat her and forced her to take him to go find the gold. Beth goes back to find the sheriff Matt and Jody gets grabbed from behind by who she thinks is Ray, but it's actually an elderly older woman who could be Molly Morgan. Ray than appears and tries to grab Jody, but is hit over the head by a shovel by this mysterious woman. Beth is reunited with Jody and they find Ray unconscious, but the woman disappears. Matt the sheriff, finally finds Beth and Jody. Ray gets arrested. Lynette is recovering in the hospital and Jody hugs her and apologizes. In late August, the Sherrie arrives at Beth's house and brings her and Kate and Jody and Lynette into the courthouse where an attorney gets represented by an anonymous client who has given a gift to Beth and Jody. They are both given two cloth bags each containing a lot of gold and the town cheers for them including Tracy and Samantha. Beth and Jody go outside and high five each other. During the credits, they are seen twirling around.
