Jane Austen's friend, suspected of being a French Spy, is under the shadow of the scaffold. Torn between fealty to her paramour, Lord Ashton, and her best friend, Lady Trowbridge, Jane Austen must undertake to reconcile the religious differences of the two, by resorting to subterfuge. Even while defending Lady Trowbridge's innocence (the good lady is accused of being a French Spy), she keeps the good offices of Lord Ashton by ostensibly plotting with him to find evidence of Lady Trowbridge's perfidy, while at the same time trying to exonerate her friend. This period piece grapples with the religious tensions of Georgian-era England as it was always in the looming shadow of Napoleon.
