Humboldt County: The Humboldt We Make Together
Dubbed in : English ( Original )
Told in vignettes, each in a different visual style, a documentary about the people of Humboldt County, California, and a salmon voyage that turns out to be about more than fish. Filmmaker Henk Conn, working as director, cinematographer, and on-screen host, sets out to portray the people, places, and working communities of Humboldt County, California. The film is built from vignettes and encounters rather than a linear story, with each segment shot in a different visual style. Drawing on two years of footage from his People and Places series, he meets bookshop owners, oyster farmers, chainsaw carvers, circus performers, gallery artists, and cannabis-industry workers, and visits events such as the Arcata Oyster Festival and the Kinetic Sculpture Race. Alongside the community portrait, Conn joins Captain Dave Weber and deckhand Wesley Churchill for a three-day commercial salmon fishing trip out of Woodley Island in Eureka. The voyage ends unexpectedly in Coos Bay, Oregon. Five King Salmon are caught, a sea lion takes two of them, and the remaining catch barely covers expenses. Original music is by Lafayette Ben Charlatan.
