This is a story about the people who saved the river—and about the battles for it that are not yet over. Today, the upper reaches of the Soca River are regarded as one of Europe's last untamed rivers. Yet just a few decades ago, this fairytale landscape came perilously close to disappearing forever. One after another, plans emerged to build massive dams and reservoirs that would have transformed the valley beyond recognition. But each new threat was met by courageous individuals determined to protect the river. Through an extraordinary chain of events, acts of defiance, and unwavering perseverance, they repeatedly prevailed. Yet the struggle is far from over. The threat of dams has given way to new pressures: mass tourism, uncontrolled development, and commercial interests that see the river and its valley less as a natural treasure to be preserved than as an opportunity for easy profit. The Soca survived the dams that would have drowned its beauty beneath reservoirs. But can it survive the weight of its own fame—and the relentless appetite of greed?
