Karan, a spoiled teenager, joins the Indian Army on a whim but backs out when he finds a soldier's life to be difficult. When this creates conflict with his girlfriend, he reenlists and proves his mettle by becoming an officer just as war breaks out. Karan Shergill (Hrithik Roshan) is a young man who has no goal or plans for his future. His father Sanjeev (Boman Irani) is a businessman and his brother Udesh is a successful individual living in America, but Karan is drifting along. His girlfriend, Romila / Romi (Preity Zinta), a student activist and reporter who espouses fashionable causes out of well-meaning sincerity, tells him he needs to find a goal in life. Romi stays with her parents Akhilesh (M. K. Raina) and Mrs. Dutta (Lillete Dubey). Romi believes that the day Karan decides what to do in life, he would be unstoppable. When a friend Parvesh (Gaurav Rana) announces that he is going to join the Indian Military Academy, Karan applies as well (after watching the movie Commando and getting inspired by Arnold's character in it), despite dissent from his parents. Meanwhile, Parvesh is counseled by his parents, and he backs out of joining the Army and decides to do an MBA from US and plans to settle there. Karan clears the written exam and the physical tests and is selected for the IMA (Indian Military Academy). Sanjeev tells Karan that he would be back from the IMA within 4 days and that he has no doubts. Karan's first days at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) are a disaster. Because he is undisciplined and unused to a spartan existence, he keeps getting into trouble. Karan is not used to getting up early in the morning and is always late for morning classes and is thereby punished for the same. Karan is careless and is also not attentive in classes. IMA is headed by Lt. General (Surendra Pal) IMA Commandant, Major Subhash Pant (Amit Behl) Company Commander, IMA and Lt. Col. Pratap Singh (Abhimanyu Singh), Adjutant, IMA. Upset, Karan leaves the academy without permission, sneaking over the wall. Back home, his parents are not surprised that Karan left the IMA mid-way. Even though they urge him to join the family business, they are disappointed with the way their son has turned out, especially in comparison to his elder brother. Romi, meanwhile, is tired of his aimless and indecisive ways and calls off their relationship. Karan finally comes to terms with his situation and makes his decision. He returns to the IMA, takes his punishment, and becomes a focused, disciplined cadet leader, graduating as an officer Lieutenant Karan Shergill. Meanwhile, Romi gets a job with a news channel and becomes an anchor, and gets busy with her life. Lt. Karan Shergill (the starting rank for all new commissioned officer in the Indian Army) is posted to the 3rd Battalion of the Punjab Regiment, commanded by Col. Sunil Damle (Amitabh Bachchan) in the Kargil sector, and handles his responsibilities well. From an immature teenager, Karan transforms into a mature officer: He finally decides the essence of his life or his goal. Romi is now a news anchor and going steady with Rajeev, who wants to marry her. Romi thinks of Rajeev as a friend but agrees to consider his proposal. Damle tells all his officers that the citizens of India sleep peacefully knowing that the army protects their borders. Damle's unit is in charge of protecting villages along the LOC with Pakistan, and a section of the Srinagar to Leh highway, which is the only road connection to Leh. The border posts have an unwritten rule that the soldiers are withdrawn from forward posts during peak winters when temperatures reach minus 50 degrees. The unspoken understanding is that no side takes advantage of this situation. The unit includes Maj. Binod Sengupta (Sharad Kapoor) OC A Company, Maj. Kaushal Verma (Raj Zutshi) OC D Company, Captain Jalal Akbar (Sushant Singh) OC E Company, Maj. Satish Babbar (Nawab Shah) OC B Company, Capt. Manjit Singh Dhingra (Aarav Choudhary) OC C Company, Lt. Col. Pradeep (2IC), Captain (Dr.) Sudhir Mishra (Abir Goswami) RMO, Army Medical Corps, Captain Vishal Srivastav (Prashant Chainani) and others. Karan comes home on leave and finds out that Romi is getting engaged and goes to the ceremony to congratulate her. Romi is now engaged to Rajeev (Kushal Punjabi). Karan is recalled to his post as his leave is cut short due to outbreak of hostilities in Kargil. He reports back to his post where he is promoted to the rank of Acting Captain. Colonel Damle briefs the officers, revealing that infiltrators crossed the Line of Control (LoC) from Pakistan and occupied a series of mountain peaks on the Indian side during the winter. The battalion has been assigned to secure Point 5179, a crucial vantage point dominating the army's main supply line, the NH1D. Since the other sides of the mountain are perilous to cross, the battalion decides to attack from the eastern side. The first part of the assault is successful in destroying the enemy's screening units, with Karan cited for his bravery. Meanwhile, Romi goes to Kargil as a war correspondent, where she meets a changed Karan and falls in love with him again. In the second phase, the battalion fails to capture the peak and suffers heavy casualties. Colonel Damle is given 48 hours, and he orders a group of twelve officers and soldiers (including Karan) to scale a 1000-foot rock cliff on the western side to flank the enemy. Karan finally finds his aim in capturing the peak and rekindles his relationship with Romi as well; after finding out she broke her engagement. The unit sets off on its mission but loses its commanding officer and many soldiers to enemy fire. The remaining six men push forward and scale the cliff, attacking the Pakistani position during the night. Their assault is successful, although Karan is injured. The next morning, he spots the remaining Pakistani intruders and kills them. He then he limps to the peak and plants the Indian flag, capturing it at last, while signaling Colonel Damle. A few days later, Karan is discharged from a military hospital and reunites with his parents and Romi. Colonel Damle, Lieutenant Colonel Pradeep (Aditya Srivastava), and Subhedar Major Pritam Singh (Om Puri) pay their respects to all the martyrs of Operation Vijay.
