"Summa Cum Loser" is a coming-of-age dramedy that proves you never really finish coming of age. It follows Avery Hill, a once college valedictorian and aspiring filmmaker who is now making macchiatos at an LA coffee shop, steaming all her potential away. When she's not writing or making coffee, she is hanging out with her little brother and her four individualistic best friends. At a loss for what to do when her carefully curated post-college plan falls apart, she reluctantly accepts the help of an old college professor which propels her into the cutthroat world of the entertainment industry. Her first big meeting with a studio executive goes well by industry standards but would require her to completely change her script. As a headstrong and often uncompromising writer, she politely offers to think about it. She is met with much more rejection mostly rooted in the sexist undertones of the entertainment industry. Through each meeting it becomes an internal battle Avery must face, does she sell out and live up to everyone's expectations or does she stick to her ideals and attempt to forge her own way through Hollywood? After a potent feminist/workers rights rant at a studio meeting causes a falling out with her professor, she attempts to sell her screenplay on her own. This task proves much harder than she thinks and she begins to take out her frustrations on the people closest to her. Her friends call her out on her bad behavior and make her take a true look at herself. After a conversation with her mother, she realizes that being strong doesn't mean never taking criticism and that at the end of the day, the only person she has to answer to is herself. She decides to make her movie and to do it her way. She takes what is left of her savings and makes a low-budget Indie film with her friends. In the end, proving that success means different things to everyone.
