Mark of the Devil Part II
The film opens in a remote Austrian village where fear and religious fervor have taken hold. Elisabeth von Salmenau, a noblewoman of grace and intelligence, lives a quiet life with her husband and young son, Alexander. Their peace is shattered when Balthasar von Ross, a ruthless inquisitor, arrives with his enforcer Natas and a tribunal of zealots. Under the guise of rooting out witchcraft, Balthasar begins a campaign of terror, using torture and false confessions to consolidate power and satisfy his own twisted desires. Elisabeth's husband is one of the first to fall, accused of heresy and executed without trial. Alexander, still a child, is branded the spawn of the devil due to a birthmark and his mother's refusal to submit to Balthasar's authority. Elisabeth pleads for her son's innocence, but her resistance only fuels Balthasar's obsession. When she rejects his sexual advances, he retaliates by accusing her of witchcraft. She is arrested, stripped of her title, and subjected to brutal torture in the castle's dungeons. Meanwhile, the village descends into chaos. Innocent women are dragged from their homes, tortured, and executed. The tribunal's cruelty escalates, with scenes of branding, flogging, and psychological torment. Father Melchior, a local priest, initially supports the inquisition but begins to question its righteousness as the body count rises. He attempts to intervene on Elisabeth's behalf but is silenced by the tribunal. Elisabeth's son Alexander is hidden by a sympathetic nun, Clementine, who risks her life to protect him. As the tribunal prepares to execute Elisabeth, a revolt brews among the villagers, who have grown weary of the bloodshed. In a climactic sequence, the castle is stormed, and Balthasar is confronted by the very people he sought to dominate. He is killed in the chaos, and the tribunal collapses. Elisabeth, broken but alive, is reunited with her son. The film ends with the two of them walking away from the smoldering ruins of the castle, uncertain of what lies ahead but free from the shadow of tyranny.
