In the kingdom of Edenia, Young Princess Kitana (Sophia Xu) stands beside her father, King Jerrod (Desmond Chiam), and her mother, Queen Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen), as Jerrod faces Emperor Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) in Mortal Kombat. Jerrod fights back against the massive emperor and drives his blade toward a killing blow, but Shao Kahn seizes Jerrod's hand and turns the weapon against the king, then impales him with his own war hammer. The Edenians bow. Shao Kahn approaches the young princess and tells her she is now his daughter. Years later in Outworld, the adult Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) trains alongside her bodyguard Jade (Tati Gabrielle). Shao Kahn directs the sorcerer Shang Tsung (Chin Han) to acquire the Amulet of Shinnok, a relic capable of granting its bearer godlike power. In the Netherrealm, the necromancer Quan Chi (Damon Herriman) carries out Shao Kahn's parallel command, resurrecting Earthrealm warrior Kung Lao (Max Huang) as a revenant, a creature stripped of free will and bent to Outworld's purpose. Quan Chi attempts the same with mercenary Kano (Josh Lawson), but Kano's inherent corruption leaves no virtue for Quan Chi to exploit and control, and the process fails to subjugate him. In Earthrealm, Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) are assembling champions for the approaching Mortal Kombat tournament. Alongside Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), Cole Young (Lewis Tan), and Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), they identify washed-up action star Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) as their fifth. Raiden and Sonya locate Johnny at a fan convention, where his following has dwindled. They bring him to Outworld, where he observes the other champions' arcana-based powers and learns that fighters die in the tournament. Johnny declines and returns to Earthrealm. At a bar, a fan (Sam Cotton) approaches him and suggests a comeback. Johnny, miserable, is summoned back to Outworld before he can order another drink. Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, and revenant Kung Lao converge on Raiden and attack him in his sky temple. Kung Lao throws his razor hat through the temple window and slits Raiden's throat. Shang Tsung channels the stolen divine power into the Amulet of Shinnok, and Quan Chi binds the charged amulet to Shao Kahn, granting him effective immortality. Raiden is left barely alive and incapacitated. The tournament opens. Johnny is teleported into a fight against Kitana, unaware of her capabilities. She defeats him decisively, but when Shao Kahn orders her to finish him, she lets Johnny fall unconscious without executing the command. Defying the emperor, Kitana leaves him alive. Sonya faces a corrupted Sindel, whose sonic screams redirect Sonya's attacks back at her. Sonya moves behind Sindel and uses her energy rings to blast a hole through Sindel's back, then drives Sindel's head down onto a floor spike. Liu Kang faces Kung Lao in the tournament arena. Recognizing his cousin under the revenant's corruption, Liu Kang attempts to reach him. Kung Lao, fully in Outworld's service, attacks with his razor hat and tries to corrupt Liu Kang in turn. Liu Kang blocks the hat's spinning path, pulls Kung Lao down onto the blade, and kills him with his own weapon. He tells Kung Lao's body that he will find a way to restore him. Cole fights Shao Kahn. He lands wounds on the emperor, but the amulet's power heals each injury instantly. Shao Kahn slams Cole to the ground and brings his war hammer down on Cole's head. The surviving champions reconvene with Raiden. Kitana arrives and reveals she has been operating as a double agent for Raiden, working against Shao Kahn from within Outworld. Jade confronts Kitana over this betrayal. In a subsequent tournament bout, Jax fights Jade and defeats her, but chooses to spare her life in return for Kitana's earlier mercy toward Johnny. Recognizing that Shao Kahn cannot be beaten while the amulet makes him immortal, the remaining heroes travel to the territory of the Tarkatans. Their leader Baraka (CJ Bloomfield) refuses to help until Johnny addresses the assembled Tarkatans as cowards for refusing a challenge. Baraka selects Johnny rather than Liu Kang as his opponent. Johnny dodges Baraka's retractable arm blades, lands a series of strikes, and drives his fist into Baraka's groin. Baraka, impressed, declares it the finest fighting he has ever witnessed. He agrees to ally with the Earthrealm champions and guides them to a concealed entrance beneath Shao Kahn's palace. Jade takes Kitana into custody for Shao Kahn. Shao Kahn confronts Kitana and reveals that Quan Chi has already resurrected Sindel in a manner that cannot be undone a second time, threatening to kill her again permanently if Kitana refuses to identify the Earthrealm champions' location. Kitana says nothing. Shao Kahn orders her chained in a public square as an example. The four champions enter the palace. Liu Kang moves to seize the amulet, but Shao Kahn finds him. Liu Kang uses his fire powers while Jax attempts to break the cage encasing the amulet. Shao Kahn drives the hilt of his hammer through Jax's throat. Sonya witnesses Jax's death from across the chamber. Meanwhile, Bi-Han (Joe Taslim), resurrected by Quan Chi not as the Lin Kuei enforcer he once was but as the shadow wraith Noob Saibot, a teleporting figure armed with a sickle and accompanied by a shadow clone he deploys as a second combatant, takes the amulet from the palace and withdraws to the Netherrealm to conceal it. Kano finds Johnny elsewhere in the palace and tells him that he has been working against Outworld. The luxuries of Earthrealm, absent in Outworld, have made Kano's preference clear. He informs Johnny that Bi-Han is now in the Netherrealm with the amulet. Raiden uses what remains of his diminished power to send Kano and Johnny there. Shang Tsung, taking advantage of Raiden's exposed and weakened state, moves toward the temple to kill him. In the Netherrealm, Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) exists in a replica of his former home, suspended in the repetition of his afterlife. He refuses to engage in any further conflict until Kano tells him that Bi-Han has returned. Scorpion calls out his chain, declaring "Get over here," and joins the mission. Jade, having crossed to Earthrealm's side, joins Johnny, Kano, and Scorpion in the Netherrealm. She transfers Kitana's iconic razor fans to Scorpion's group for Kitana and takes up her bo staff as her own weapon. In Edenia, Shao Kahn faces Liu Kang and Sonya simultaneously in the tournament's final bout. He overcomes Sonya quickly and turns to Liu Kang. Despite Liu Kang's fire powers, Shao Kahn impales him through the stomach. Liu Kang does not die. His body dissolves into embers and fire, and as he dissipates he vows: "This is not the end, it's only the beginning." Sonya uses her energy rings to sever Kitana's chains in the public square. Kitana denounces Shao Kahn and formally declares herself aligned with Earthrealm. In the Netherrealm, Jade, Kano, and Scorpion bring their combined powers against the amulet, but it holds. Johnny, accepting what it means that he was chosen, addresses Bi-Han directly and declares that he is Johnny Cage. His arcana unlocks. He delivers a single powerful kick that shatters the amulet and sends Bi-Han into a lava pit. Scorpion bisects Noob Saibot vertically. The amulet's destruction immediately restores Raiden's power. He blasts Shang Tsung out of the temple before Shang Tsung can reach him. Shao Kahn, stripped of the amulet's protection and now mortal, faces Kitana in the arena where her father died. Kitana slashes him repeatedly with her fans and cuts away his helmet, exposing his face. Shao Kahn seizes her by the throat and says, "Weak, just like your father." Kitana brings both fans together like a rotor blade and drives them through Shao Kahn's head. She is the rightful Queen of Edenia. Kitana stands before the gathered Edenians and tells them they do not need to bow to her. Scorpion returns to the Netherrealm. Johnny recounts his exploits to Baraka and a group of Tarkatan children. Kano presents the captured Quan Chi to the assembled survivors, who include Raiden, Johnny, Sonya, Kitana, Jade, Kano, and Baraka. They agree to use Quan Chi to attempt the resurrection of their fallen allies. Raiden summons a lightning bolt.
