Moving Violation
Eddie Moore is a former auto factory worker from Detroit, who drifts into the small desert town of Rockfield. When he reaches the city limits, he is stopped by Sheriff Rankin and his deputy Tylor, who hassle Eddie, claiming he is trouble. As they drop Eddie off in a nearby oil field, Rankin warns him to leave town before morning. Shortly after, he goes to a ice cream stand, where he meets an employee, Cam Johnson, who he manages to talk to her into a free cone. Cam immediately takes a liking to Eddie and, later, she takes him to a swimming pool for skinny-dipping, owned by H.L. Rockfield, the town's wealthiest man. Meanwhile, Tylor, not satisfied with his regular earnings, wants a share of Rockfield's payroll, that Rankin is a part of, and tricks Rockfield into letting Tylor come over to his mansion for dinner. When Tylor arrives, he starts accusing Rockfield for pumping oil from a neighboring state and jacking up its prices to the locals. Rockfield, outraged by Tylor's remarks, calls over the next room for Rankin, who overheard the whole conversation, to Tylor's shock. As Cam and Eddie make love in the garden, an angry Rankin chases Tylor outside. After a brief scuffle, Rankin shoots him. Hearing the commotion, Cam and Eddie quickly sneak off the property, as a badly-wounded Tylor staggers out the backyard and seeks refuge in the back of Cam's van. Rankin gets into his car and, seeing that Tylor is in the back of the van, chases Cam and Eddie out of town and orders another deputy, Bubba, to put out an all-points bulletin and label Cam and Eddie as the killers. After Rankin shoots through the van's windshield, Cam loses control and crashes. Rankin gets out and, while shooting at them, loses his balance and hits his head on a rock, knocking him unconscious. Cam and Eddie then steal Rankin's car and contact Bubba over the radio that they did not kill Tylor, but Bubba wants them to stay put until he arrives. However, Frank, another deputy, who overheard the conversation, gets the impression they are the killers and immediately speeds to Cam and Eddie's location. When Rankin regains consciousness, he shoots the van's gas tank, exploding the van and torching Tylor's body, before Bubba arrives to pick him up. Meanwhile, Frank shows up at the location and orders Cam and Eddie out of the car at gunpoint. When Cam takes out one of Rankin's guns to dispose of it, Frank panics, opens fire, and Cam and Eddie get back in and speed off, with Frank in pursuit. Up ahead, Bubba and Rankin mistakes Frank's car as Rankin's and he opens fire with a shotgun. When Frank loses control and crashes, Bubba and Rankin discover Frank in the car, who desperately pleads with them not to shoot anymore. When Rankin's car conks out, Cam and Eddie steal a Cadillac from a traveling salesman, who eventually tracks them down the road at a service station cafe. After the salesman is defeated in a fight with Eddie and other patrons, he and Cam take and arrive in the nearby town of Cody. Knowing that they need to call a lawyer to straighten the situation out, they discover Rankin already notified the local police and are now after them, too. They steal another car from a supermarket parking lot, leading the cops on another chase and Eddie shot in the arm by one on a motorcycle. Later, they duck into an empty house, where they tend to Eddie's wound. The next day, they manage to call the local law office run by Alex Warren. Though Cam and Eddie are skeptical that they can trust him, Alex knows a lot about Rankin's shady history and shows a dislike to him, too. He offers to let Cam and Eddie stay at his house, while he sets up a court date. Later that night, when Alex delivers the good news, Eddie tells him the deal is off, as he does not think the judge, the jury, or anyone else would believe their story, and plans to go to Mexico with Cam. However, she insists that they go with Alex's plan, as she is tired of running. The next morning, Alex, who has hidden Cam and Eddie in the back of his station wagon, starts to drive to Rockfield for the trial, until he is stopped by waiting deputies, who think Alex has Cam and Eddie hiding in the back, but they are denied access to search. As Rankin does not want Cam and Eddie to stand trial, they are chased by a hired bounty hunter, whose car is destroyed during the pursuit and, shortly after, and by Rankin and Bubba in a pickup truck, but are run off the road. When they reach the courthouse, Cam, Eddie, and Alex are ambushed by shotgun-toting hoods, Rankin and Bubba in disguise, in a station wagon and quickly speed down an alley. Alex is killed, with Eddie, though wounded, running off with a squad of deputies in pursuit, and Cam, now in a catatonic state from shock, taken to the hospital. Eddie manages to hide in a dumpster and plans a sneak attack on Rankin and the deputies. That night, using a sniper rifle, he blows up their police cars on the front lot of the police station, kills Rankin in the process, and escapes into the night. The next day, he sneaks onto the hospital's property and coaxes Cam to run away with him by guiding her to climb up a chain-link fence to escape.
