My Darling Clementine
Arizona, 1882 Wyatt Earp (Henry Fonda) and his brothers Morgan (Ward Bond), Virgil (Tim Holt) and James (Don Garner) are herding cattle. Old Man Clanton (Walter Brennan) and his oldest son Ike (Grant Withers) come by and offer to buy the cattle at a low price. They are turned out. Wyatt mention that he'll go to into Tombstone that night. James, the youngest brother, stays at the camp while his brothers go into town. Drunk Indian Charley starts shooting up the town. When the sheriff quits rather than tangle with Charley, Wyatt apprehends the culprit. The mayor (Roy Roberts) offers Wyatt the job of marshal when he finds out he is the famous Wyatt Earp who cleaned up Dodge City, but Wyatt declines. The Earps return to camp to find that James has been murdered and all their cattle rustled (stolen). Wyatt suspects the Clantons. he accepts the job of marshal and makes Morgan and Virgil his deputies. Wyatt visits James's grave and talks of a time when kids can grow up safely. Wyatt, who loves to play poker, gets angry when Chihuahua (Linda Darnell), the pretty entertainer who works at the saloon, lets a professional gambler know what cards he holds. He throws her in a water trough. Famous gunslinger Dr. John 'Doc' Holliday (Victor Mature), who runs the town's gambling, returns to Tombstone and tosses the gambler out of the saloon. He challenges Wyatt to a draw when he learns that he is the new town marshal, but changes his mind when he sees Morgan and Virgil backing up the unarmed man. Instead, Doc Holliday and Wyatt have a drink together and become fast friends, much to the chagrin of Chihuahua, who is Holliday's girl. Wyatt is considered about Holliday's tuberculosis from his constant coughing, and that he will not stop drinking or seek medical treatment. However, he is impressed by Holliday's knowledge and sophistication. A pretty young woman named Clementine Carter (Cathy Downs), arrives in Tombstone from Baltimore. She was Holliday's fiancee. She informs Wyatt ant Holliday was once a physician, but had left her when he got sick. Wyatt is much taken by her, but tries to get her back together with Holliday. Holliday insists to Clementine that she leave town and she agrees to do so. At the same time, Holliday proposes to Chinhuaha, but he rides away by himself. Wyatt discovers James's pendant around Chihuahua's neck and demands to know where she got it. She says that Doc Holliday gave it to her. Wyatt races after stagecoach to bring him back to Tombstone. They draw on each other and Holliday is shot in his arm. Holliday makes Chihuahua tell Wyatt that Billy Clanton gave her the pendant. Billy is outside her window and shoots her. There are many shots traded, but Billy gets away with Virgil on his trail. Virgil enters the Clanton home and finds that Billy has died. Old Man Clanton guns down Virgil, as he done to James. He and his sons go into town. Holliday performs surgery on the wounded Chihuahua for her gunshot wound. He considers going back into medicine, but she soon dies. He decides to join Wyatt and Morgan when they battle the Clantons. The Clantons wait at the O.K. Corral. There is a great climatic gun battle where Doc is killed and all three of Clanton's sons. Old Man Clanton grieves, but Wyatt does not kill him and wants to let him so go he can suffer from the loss. But Old Man Clanton pulls out a gun, and Morgan kills him. Afterwords, Tombstone is peaceful once again. Clementine will be the new schoolmarm. Wyatt and Morgan are going home to see their father. Wyatt tells Clementine that he may pass through again one day and pay her a visit. She tells Wyatt that she'd like that.
