Nemesis the Movie: The Mystery of the Golden Spiral
In February 2022, Vladimir Putin declared Ukraine a pro-Nazi state and began a "special military operation," claiming he wanted to fight Nazism. This statement deeply resonated with the Jewish heritage and memory of anti-Semitism. Jews in Ukraine have a long history of suffering from pogroms and anti-Semitism, peaking during World War II, when at least 900,000 Jews were exterminated on its soil. Despite this, Ukraine today has a Jewish president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and previously had a Jewish prime minister, Volodymyr Groysman, both descendants of Holocaust survivors. "The Community" explores the contemporary Ukrainian-Jewish relationship through a personal and historical lens. I tell the story from my personal point of view, having lived in Ukraine before the war and returning to Israel due to the conflict. The film begins just before Purim, the happiest Jewish holiday, following Putin's declaration of Ukraine as a Nazi state. I decided to return to Ukraine to see if the Jewish community is safe, how they are surviving the war, and if living as a community helps them. We will hear incredible stories about the war and focus on current events with a perspective on the past. We aim to understand why Jewish people feel at home in Ukraine and are not suffering from the anti-Semitism Putin claims exists. We will also hear voices from Jews who perceive reality differently. Some believe there is an anti-Semitic movement in Ukraine, but this does not justify Russia's attack. We will uncover the struggles and dialogues between Jews and the wider Ukrainian public and how the Jewish community copes with the major events of the war. The heart of the film will focus on the female perspective, featuring interviews with Orthodox Jewish women who identify as Ukrainian patriots and refuse to emigrate from Ukraine, despite having the right to immigrate to Israel under the Law of Return. They will share their experiences and the central role they play in supporting the war effort and maintaining the community's spirit during such turbulent times. "The Community" is not just a story about the past but also a testament to the present and a vision for the future, where Jews remain an integral part of Ukraine's struggle and resilience in the face of war and its impact on the rich Jewish heritage.
