Nick Magellan works for the corrupt businessman Charlie Lupo, who presides over an influential crime syndicate in Manhattan, New York. New York senators belong to the realm of this syndicate. Charlie has a recalcitrant daughter, Kathy Lupo. She is in love with Nick. Nick protects Kathy against her father when she leaves her parental home. Charlie always knows not to be judged, but when one of the senators talks too much during a television interview, he is in the center of a massive fraud research by the law. —Robert [SPOILER at end of Summary] In Manhattan, when a gangster from the syndicate is murdered and two pedestrians are gunshot, the syndicate crime boss Charlie Lupo Broderick Crawford asks the chief of Chicago branch Johnny Achilles (Onslow Stevens) to send a hit-man to kill the gangsters that carried out the unauthorized hit. Nick Magellan (Richard Conte), who is the son of a former friend of Lupo and a loyal man, resolves the situation, and Lupo offers the position of his bodyguard to him. Lupo is a widower who lives with his mother and his rebellious daughter Kathy Anne Bancroft who hates him for being a notorious gangster. Nick is brought by Lupo to live in a room in his house to protect him. The syndicate's lawyer Robert Frawley Barry Kelley arranges a billionaire deal with corrupt politicians to transport oil. Lupo's mistress Iris Palmer Marilyn Maxwell shows interest in Nick, but he is loyal to his boss. Soon he is invited to replace Ben Dagajanian J. Carrol Naish, Lupo's right-hand man who needs to leave the country due to immigration problems. Kathy flees from home, but Nick finds her but he does not tell Lupo the whereabouts of his runaway daughter. When Lupo and the syndicate are betrayed by politician Paul Williamson William Forrest, the syndicate leaders vote to eliminate him despite Lupo's will and warning. The three hit-men commit a mistake, and Lupo is accused of murdering and needs to hide with Iris. He is a widower with a worried mother (Celia Lovsky), a grown daughter, Kathy (Anne Bancroft), and a new lover, Iris (Marilyn Maxwell). Hitman Nick Magellan (Richard Conte) of the Chicago mob impresses Lupo, who hires Nick to be his bodyguard. They form a friendship and Kathy is attracted to Nick, but he resists her advances out of respect for Lupo. When a political lobbyist interferes with the syndicate's plans and must be eliminated, Lupo arranges for three men to handle it. But they leave too many clues and themselves have to be taken care of, a task Lupo turns over to Nick. Nick quickly dispatches two of the targets, but a third flees and, in return for ratting out Lupo to the authorities, manages to arrange a deal for himself. The gangster hides out while legal negotiations concerning the charge for which Lupo will go to prison go on. Kathy, having fled her father's home in an attempt to make an independent life, is drawn back in when the police, and reporters, track her down at her job. She shows up at Nick's, clearly intoxicated, to tell him how her life has fallen apart. She throws herself at him but he rejects her. Later, she is killed in a single-car crash. The newspaper headline suggests suicide. Lupo is devastated; his heart no longer in his work, he decides to cooperate with the authorities. The syndicate determines that he must be eliminated and Nick is ordered to do it. He does the job but, as a matter of "insurance," he in turn is killed.
