The story follows Shrirenu Tripathi / Shri (R. Madhavan), a middle-aged Sanskrit professor based in Jamshedpur, who develops a relationship with Madhu Bose (Fatima Sana Shaikh), a French instructor from Kolkata. As a young boy Shri struggled with understanding female feelings. He had a crush on his classmate Rakhee but turns out she only thought of him as a friend. Shri insults the girl by saying that she is not very good looking either and hence it is in her interest to accept his proposal. Rakhee curses Shri that he will never find either love or sex in his life and will be forever frustrated. She then slaps Shri right across the face to make her point. Deepak (Namit Das) is Shri's best friend and Kartik (Divyam Dubey) is his only sincere student. Shri lives alone in an apartment and has a relationship with a mouse that comes into his apartment every day and gets caught in a trap. Shri releases the Mouse, whom he calls Pandey, every day. The Tripathi family consists of Shrirenu's brother Bhanu (Manish Chaudhary), sister-in-law Kusum (Ayesha Raza) and niece Nisha. Bhanu is a property dealer and is fairly well to do. Bhanu wants Shri to give up his teaching job and join him in his property business. Shri has rented his apartment, that he shares with Deepak, from Bhanu. Shri is already 42 years old and has been searching for a suitable match for 15 years. Kusum is also dissatisfied with her sex life and wants Bhanu to spice it up. Bhanu dismisses her concerns and asks Kusum to be busy so she can be rid of such frivolous thoughts. Deepak introduces Shri to a sex chatting app called "Aap Jaisa Koi". The app costs Rs 699 per month and promises complete privacy on its platform. Shri is not convinced but that night he decides to give the app a chance. He engages with the app and is connected to Madhu, although both do not know each other's identity. Madhu is flirtatious and is aroused talking to Shri, even though Shri approaches it as a simple talk with a woman. Shri ends up telling his full name during the call as he is very nervous. The Bose family consists of Madhu's mother Anupama, maternal uncle Joy (Saheb Chatterjee), maternal grandmother Nani (Beena Banerjee) and 2 maternal aunts (one of them being Shona (Ananya Chatterjee) and the other being Bidisha) whose husbands are Ghar Jamais. Turns out that Joy and the Tripathi's are neighbors. Joy is a big fan of Kusum's pickles. Joy proposes the marriage between Shri and his niece Madhu. Shri is not keen, but Kusum insists, and he goes to Kolkata to meet Madhu. Madhu is 32, while Shri is 42. Shri and Madhu meet at a coffee house and Shri is instantly smitten. Shri tries to tell Madhu the truth about himself, but Madhu is very accommodating and says that she is willing to relocate to Jamshedpur if they get married. Deepak believes that Shri is being Pranked by someone. Deepak and Shri select Shri's rebellious student Rakesh to go to Kolkata posing as Madhu's student to find out more about her from her family. Rakesh agrees to do this as he also needs to pass Sanskrit. Rakesh finds that Madhu had an affair with a guy named Namit. Madhu tells Shri that Namit wanted to know if she was a virgin or not. She hated this question, even though Namit was charming and endearing, but extremely conservative in his thinking. Madhu admits that she lost her virginity at 16. Yet, Shri falls in love with Madhu. The lovers have various differences: Shri's family is patriarchal whereas Madhu's family is matriarchal. Shri is a virgin whereas Madhu is sexually active. Shri is reserved whereas Madhu is outspoken. The 2 families meet formally to discuss marriage. Madhu is at her seductive best and Shri finds her irresistible. Soon, Shri and Madhu are engaged. After the engagement, Madhu starts calling Shri seductively, and that is when Shri realizes that Madhu is the girl from the app "Aap Jaisa Koi". Shri considers this as a betrayal and is distraught. He tries to run away to Agartala to avoid meeting Madhu, but she confronts him at the bus station. Shri tells Madhu that he knows that she is on the app as a service provider, and she retorts that Shri is also on the app as a customer. Madhu says that as a single woman she also has desires, and she is a paying member of the app and she does not earn anything from it. Madhu admits that she liked Shri when she spoke to him on the app. She found only one such name on Google and the address turned out to be next to where Joy was living. Shri says that he comes from a simple family and wants a simple family for himself. He breaks the engagement with Madhu. Soon, the families come to know that both Shri and Madhu first met on a sex chat app. Bhanu is livid and confronts Madhu's family. Kusum is more measured in her response and says that even Shri was on the same app. Shri and Madhu both realize that they are alone without the other and that they miss each other. Bhanu is shown to constantly badger Nisha that she should learn to do housework. Nisha has completed college and has a promising corporate career and yet Bhanu is of the opinion that a woman's correct place is in the kitchen. Kusum tries to maintain the balance between Nisha and Bhanu but only ends up suppressing her own feelings as she tries to keep Bhanu happy. Nisha counsels Shri that Madhu accepted him for who he was and wanted to build a life with him, and yet Shri left her for a frivolous reason. Nisha leaves with Kusum for Kolkata to attend a corporate meeting. Shri realizes his mistake and goes to meet Madhu in Kolkata. He finds that Madhu is meeting Namit, who also wants a second chance with her. Namit has completed his MD from John Hopkins and is opening a hospital in partnership with his father. Shri interrupts their meeting and tells Madhu that he is ready to forgive and move forward. Madhu is angry that Shri is still judging her and says that she wants equality and not forgiveness. This is when Bhanu also comes to Kolkata as the wedding venue wants him to pay for half the costs. Bhanu links up with Shri and while in a taxi they find Kusum roaming around Kolkata with Joy. A confrontation takes place at the hotel venue where Kusum finally tells Bhanu that she feels insulted by him and that in the house she has no identity of her own. Kusum leaves Bhanu and says that he will barely notice that she is gone, if he gets his meals on time. Shri supports Kusum in front of Bhanu. Shri decides to stay in Kolkata with Kusum and Joy for the Durga Pooja celebrations. Eventually Shri apologizes to Madhu and says that he will try to learn and love her as an equal. They get back together.
