In 1931 in Vienna, Ya Yunlong, a Chinese national studying to be a police officer meets and falls in love with Fanny Ebner. She follows him to his home country and struggles through turbulent cultural and political times. Based on the real life romance of Du Chengrong and Gertrude Wagner who met while he was training as a police officer in her homeland of Austria. They marry amidst racism and prejudice against their romance and subsequently move back to his homeland China, their love never wavering through half a century of difficult political and cultural changes. —mahajanssen After a long sea voyage, Fanny arrives at her new home and can finally embrace her beloved. Following an old tradition, Yunlong has his bride carried in a sedan chair to his home village, and so the girl from Vienna crosses the old rickety bridge for the first time, a bridge that will play a major role in her life. Upon arriving at Yunlong's parents' house and during the wedding celebration, Fanny realizes that her mother-in-law does not welcome her. Months later, the church wedding is overshadowed by tragedy: Fanny and Yunlong narrowly escape a bombing raid, but Yunlong's best friend and best man is killed. The initial family happiness and pleasant middle-class life obscure the view of the future. Changing political conditions and a dispute with his boss, which leads Yunlong to quit his job, drive the young family to the countryside and into isolation. All too quickly, Yunlong's political past catches up with him under Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist Chinese regime, and he is deported to a prison camp. Fanny has no choice but to work hard to ensure her children's survival. Even after Yunlong's return, their happiness is short-lived. The storm of the Red Guards does not spare Yunlong and Fanny's lives. This time, deportation to a labor camp seems to be for eternity. On Christmas Day, Fanny sets off for the labor camp to surprise her husband. And this time, fate takes its final, ominous course. —3sat
