Born of luminary family, Nanda Sen joins as village postmaster against the wish of father. His village life was comforted by the company of an orphaned low-caste housemaid, Ratna and a school teacher Rabibabu. Ratnas charm appeals to him and Nanda falls in love with her against social stigma and the familys will and decides to gets married. However, later, he succumbs to his fathers last wish to marry a match fixed by him, the postmaster lands in a crisis which leaves him no choice but to leave his dream life. Nanda is unable to overcome this sin in his lifetime and finds solace in the next one
