Retrato Familiar
Sixty years after World War 2, American Army Veteran Tom Johnson skips out on his family's plan to send him to assisted living and flies to the Netherlands to find the love of his life, translator Sarah van Praag. Old Heart tells the story of Black GI Tom Johnson who joins forces with 24-year-old Sarah van Praag and the Dutch resistance to smuggle food and supplies from the liberated south across Nazi lines to starving cities in the northern Netherlands. Their brief love affair collapses at the war's end, and sixty years later Johnson, about to be sent off to assisted living by his family, disappears on a flight to Amsterdam. While his children desperately try to locate him, Johnson tries to track down Sarah. Adapted from Peter Ferry's award winning novel, Old Heart focuses on mixed-race relationships, working across cultural boundaries, and preserving elder independence. It also takes a close look at how America fought the world's greatest racist with a segregated Army. The Old Heart story asks audiences to consider fundamental human questions such as whether differences in race, religion and country can be overcome. It also asks us to think about questions such as the amount of control the elderly have over their own lives, and the impact of the passing of time. Is it possible to overcome or even dovetail such differences, and if so how? Can there be second chances? The film is being released for the 80th anniversary of European liberation.
