Don Wallace (Finn Cole) is forced by his mother Babs Wallace (Jo Hartley) to attend a boarding school. Don is a teenager from a working-class family, who is enrolled in an exclusive public school called Slaughterhouse, where he struggles to fit in. Don finds the name Slaughterhouse to be a weird name for a school. Don was in the middle of moving schools, and Babs found that a place opened up in Slaughterhouse in the middle of the semester. Babs says that this school, Don will get direction and will rub shoulders with the future PMs, actors and pop stars. Mr. Meredith Houseman (Simon Pegg) is the housemaster, Willoughby Blake (Asa Butterfield) is Don's new roommate. Houseman and Blake are a bit cagey sharing anything about Blake's old roommate Viscount Seymour, as both find excuses whenever the topic comes up in front of Don. The school has houses, Andromeda is for girls, Xenephobes is for nerds, Olympus is for jocks, and Sparta/Farta is for the losers of the school. The school itself is an old palace, surrounded by woods on all sides and having a small lake in the middle of the estate. Swimming in the lake is not allowed, and woods are out of bounds. Clegg (Tom Rhys-Harries) is a snob & school prefect and Caspar De Brunose (Jamie Blackley) is the head boy. Audrey (Margot Robbie) is Houseman's crush, who was visiting slaughterhouse for just one year. Houseman misses Audrey, who is now in Africa. Houseman has regular video chats with Audrey and believes that he made a mistake by letting her go. Audrey was the school nurse and is now working in war torn areas to save lives of children. The Bat (Michael Sheen) is the principal of the school. A student committed suicide by hanging himself in the Sparta house, last semester. Presumably it was Viscount Seymour. A new fracking site opens on school grounds and leads to a sinkhole to open up. The fracking project was authorized by The Bat, who says that there is a large concentration of Shale gas under the school grounds, and this will substantial funds which will then be used to build a dry ski slope for the students and a long overdue prefect spa. Houseman goes jogging through the woods and finds the huge fracking tower. The sinkhole is also full of gas and the company sends down a pipe to suck it all up. The sonar images indicate something moving in the underground tunnels, but the workers ignore it to concentrate on the mother lode of gas. According to school legend, in 1330's a knight emerged to slaughter a mythical beast that was terrorizing the village and in exchange he was given title to the lands where the castle was built in 1334. The castle was converted in a school in 1770. Don has the hots for Clemsie Lawrence (Hermione Corfield). Clegg hates Don for eyeing Clemsie. Clegg is rumored to have come from a long line of criminals in his family. Blake counsels Don that Clemsie is the most sought-after girl in school, and he doesn't yet have the social credentials to approach her for a date. On a morning jog, Clegg was pushing everybody hard, and Don and Blake fell behind. Breakfast was going to close in 20 minutes, and they had no chance of making it through the normal route. Blake, and Don venture through the woods for a shortcut and discover the sinkhole with foul smells emanating from it. Blake takes a sample of the gas and sees that it can be set on fire. During their run they also meet Woody (Nick Frost) who is leading a protest group against fracking and warns Don & Blake against unimaginable horrors coming out from the sinkhole. Woody says that the sinkhole is a result of greedy capitalism and is a straight gateway to hell. He also alleges that The Bat and the CEO of the fracking company were chums back in the school days. Don was keeping an eye on Clemsie and one day he finds her hooking up with Smudger (Louis Strong). Don shares a smoke with Clemsie who tells him that Seymour was gay and was caught in a closet with another student. Clegg informed his parents, and Seymour committed suicide due to the embarrassment. Clegg finds Don smoking and chases him around the school throwing firecrackers at him. Don and Blake try to jump into the lake, but Clegg's firecracker ends up igniting the lake itself. That night a massive earthquake rocks slaughterhouse. The same night a monstrous scream emerges from the sinkhole. Clemsie, Kay (Isabella Laughland), Don and Blake venture out to investigate and find small, vicious rat creatures who attack them. Clemsie manages to kill one and takes it to The Bat. But he refuses to call in any authorities. Thats when one of the large rat like creatures attacks the entire group. The Bat is killed in the ensuing meddle, but the group escapes in the Bat's car. The group wants to escape, but Clemsie says she has to go back to the school to rescue Smudger as he is her brother. Don agrees as he is relieved that Smudger isn't her boyfriend. A pack of these rats attack a frat party, where Smudger is. Clemsie and Don rescue him, while Houseman kills one of the rats himself. Houseman decides that the group needs firepower to repel the rats. He leads the group to the school armory. But Clegg is already there and refuses to give arms to Blake and Don, whom he hates. He shoots Houseman, who calls Audrey, but isn't able to speak to her before both he and Clegg are carried away by rats. The group now decides to hide underneath the school tunnels, where they find Woody. The rats follow the group inside the tunnels and eat Woody. The group manages to escape out of the tunnels, but Blake and Don execute Woody's plan and set fire to the tunnels to kill all the rats. Clemsie and Don kiss. Meanwhile, the Headmaster's dog Mr Chips, and Houseman, who survived the attack, witness the school's destruction.
