On Bird Island, the reclusive Red (Jason Sudeikis) makes a living by acting as a clown for "hatch-day parties". But he tends to be late & gets very angry when he is accused of tardiness. Red, a bird with a short temper, is an outcast on Bird Island, an island containing a village inhabited by anthropomorphic, flightless birds. Red lives on Bird Island in a house by the beach, away from the rest of the other flightless birds. As a kid, he was mocked for his huge eyebrows, and to this day, he still has no friends. Red runs through the forest frantically with an egg. Red runs into trees and several other animals before making it to the home of a bird family. He puts on a clown get-up and starts singing to little Timmy for his hatch-day, but Timmy is scared of clowns. Timmy's dad (Hannibal Buress) chastises Red for showing up late to the party, as well as for damaging the cake. The dad refuses to pay for the cake, causing Red to snap and shove the cake in his face. As he tries leaving, Red accidentally cracks the family's new egg, making his face the first thing the hatch-ling sees. Red is sentenced to anger management classes after his temper causes a "premature hatching" of a customer's egg. Judge Peckinpah (Keegan-Michael Key) calls Red out for his anger issues, to which Red responds by pulling off his robe and showing he is a small bird standing on top of another bird named Cyrus (Tony Hale). This is the highest penalty allowed on the island. The whole bird society is centered around hatching eggs & rearing the young ones to adulthood. So, Red's repeated mistakes are seen as a major issue. Resentful, Red avoids getting to know his classmates Chuck (Josh Gad) who is hyperactive and can move at hyper-velocity, Bomb (Danny McBride) who literally blows up when he gets angry, and Terence (Sean Penn) who is huge and doesn't talk a lot, and the instructor Matilda (Maya Rudolph). The birds then try yoga exercises to stay calm, but Bomb ends up exploding. After the class, Chuck and Bomb invite Red to hang out, but he turns them down. He goes home alone. Red manages to antagonize his entire class by not doing his assignments and then by vandalizing the greeting bird sign at the door of the anger management clinic. One day, a boat docks at the island's shore and knocks over Red's house. The birds greet two green-colored pigs, the captain Leonard and his assistant Ross, who claim to be peaceful explorers bringing offerings of friendship. They come from Piggy Island. Leonard says it's just the two of them, and he wants to befriend the birds. They introduce the birds to innovative technologies such as slingshots, trampolines and helium balloons. Red is suspicious of the pigs & investigates their boat with Chuck and Bomb, which had destroyed Red's house when it anchored off the island. He also finds that there are dozens of pigs hidden in the ship's hold, contradicting Leonard's claim that he and Ross are alone. When Red returns and shows everyone the other pigs, the birds accept Leonard's explanation that he only lied to see if Bird Island was safe for his simple-minded cousins. Leonard says they're his cousins and that he wanted to put on a cowboy show for them. The lead cowboy, Earl (Blake Shelton), gets his show going, while Peckinpah finds it more awful that Red decided to sneak onto the pigs' boat. No-one on the island cares for Red's warnings as they love the new technology that the pigs have bought. Red then gets suspicious when he sees Leonard eyeballing an egg. More pigs arrive and seemingly adjust to society, but Red becomes suspicious of their motives, as they slowly overwhelm the island. Red recruits Chuck and Bomb to help him find Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage), a giant bald eagle said to be the protector of the island, and the only bird that can fly, but who has not been seen for many years. They then realize they climbed the wrong mountain, forcing them to take another long journey up the real mountain. They find the Lake of Wisdom, so Chuck and Bomb start swimming and drinking from it. Mighty Eagle then appears and starts peeing in the lake. They find him on top of Bird Mountain, but Mighty Eagle is now overweight, self-absorbed, and largely in retirement. However, instead of helping the birds, Mighty Eagle just indulges in his prized possessions and his own theme song. Looking through the Mighty Eagle's binoculars, Red's group sees the pigs planting explosives around the island while the birds are at a rave party. They realized that the party was a ruse to steal the birds' eggs. When Mighty Eagle refuses to help them, Red admonishes him. Red, Chuck, and Bomb rush back to the village and come across the pigs stealing the eggs while the other birds are attending a party the pigs threw for them. Chuck rushes into the party to warn everyone while Red and Bomb run to the ship. They grab onto the net holding all the eggs. Bomb climbs up the chain to try and blow it up, but Leonard and his Hench pigs spray him with a hose, knocking him and Red into the water. The pigs escape, and their explosives destroy the village. The other birds apologized to Red for not listening to him. When the birds realize what happened, Red rallies them to let loose their anger and take back their eggs. Red forgives everyone and under his leadership, they organize an army and build a boat from the rubble to follow the pigs to Piggy Island. The birds build their boat and attach the giant slingshot to it. They sail to Piggy Island, where they find the pigs living in a walled city ruled by Leonard, known as "King Mudbeard". Deducing the eggs are most likely in the central castle of the city, the birds attack and defeat the pigs by firing themselves into the pig village using a giant slingshot. Matilda goes first, and she shoots explosive eggs out of her butt. Hal the boomerang bird (Anthony Padilla) goes next, but he ends up flying back toward the birds. Bubbles (Ian Hecox) follows, and he inflates to a massive size against the pigs. Stella follows, but she can't reach the castle. Most of the birds miss the castle but destroy other buildings, with Red, Chuck, and Bomb being the only ones successfully shot into the castle. Red, Chuck, and Bomb find the eggs in a boiler room. The pigs lower the eggs into a giant pot, planning to cook and eat them. Red is holding on to the top of the net and then tackles the pig lowering them into the pot so he can pull them up. Mighty Eagle arrives, having watched these events through his binoculars and had a change of heart, and carries the net of eggs out of the castle. As the birds' escape, one egg falls out and rolls back into the castle. Mighty Eagle flies away with the eggs, but the pigs are headed toward them on their planes. Bomb drops down and makes a huge explosion to stop them from flying off the ramp. Red battles the pigs' king Leonard (Bill Hader). They fall into a room containing the pigs' reserve of dynamite, which Leonard accidentally ignites. The dynamite explodes, destroying the city, but the giant pot falls on top of Red, shielding him and the egg from the blast. Red reunites with the other birds, and the rescued egg hatches, revealing three little blue birds. He is declared a hero and has been given a new house in the middle of the village. He, Chuck, and Bomb are approached by Mighty Eagle, who claims that he wasn't lazy but instead deliberately made the birds lose faith in him so they could find faith in themselves. The hatch-lings then sing a song for Red, which really moves him. Chuck and Bomb then invite Red to hang out, but he decides to stay home alone. The two are about to leave disappointed, but Red says he was joking, and he invites them inside. It is revealed that some of the pigs survived Piggy Island's destruction and have begun to hatch a new plan to steal the eggs. The three blue birds rescued by Red use the rebuilt slingshot to launch themselves out to sea.
