Spring Blossom
Tourism has grown selling us picture perfect images of tourist destinations, but also generated problems like overtourism and social tensions. From Venice to Barcelona we discover if those problems will still exist after the pandemic. For years tourism has sold us an idealized image of tourist destinations, creating economic growth but also distorting these postcard images. I live in the Cinque Terre , an Italian destination, and I wanted to see for myself these transformations. It is 2019, the problems caused by overtourism are clear but the administrators don't have the means to front them. To understand more I fly to London at the World Travel Market where experts teach how to balance tourism with residents and environment. Then I go to Venice to meet a civic group of citizens protesting against the local administration. I go to Barcelona to see local administration battling against online tourism platforms. I see how the cruise ships generate huge flows of tourists which cannot be managed properly. Covid-19 arrives in March 2020 and tourism stops, the problems associated with tourism look to have gone. But have they really disappeared?
