Arjun (G. V. Prakash Kumar) is a newsreader who lives in Chennai with his single mother Lakshmi (Rohini), his short-tempered brother, Saravana (Kaali Venkat), sister-in-law, Kalpana (Nandhini) and nephew, Santhosh (Rockstar Kamalesh). Kalpana is a writer of short stories which she gives to Saravana for evaluation. She wants the stories to be published, but Saravana completely ignores her. Saravana is a self-centered man and does not care about anyone else's opinions. Saravana keeps Kalpana engaged in menial housework. Arjun suffers from light sleep, which means the quietest of sounds will awaken him. There is pressure on Arjun to get married from his family, but he wants to wait till he can find a stable job. Saravana once again yells at Arjun and says that the family has already made a decision and has considered Arjun's best interests. In Coonoor, Deepika Alias Deepu (Aishwarya Rajesh) is seeking for an alliance, which normally fails because she addresses her snoring problem. As Arjun's Mother Lakshmi and Deepika's Mother, Vasanthi (Geetha Kailasam) were old schoolmates, Arjun and Deepika both get along well and eventually get married. It was Vasanthi who asked Deepika not to tell Arjun about her snoring problem, saying that she would discuss the matter with Lakshmi. On the first night, Arjun confesses about his light sleepiness, which makes Deepika paranoid. Deepika realizes that her mother never informed Lakshmi about her snoring problem, and hence Arjun is completely unaware of it. She decides to stay awake on her mother's advice but falls asleep and ends up waking up Arjun. Arjun becomes paranoid, and he starts avoiding Deepika and doesn't even have sex with her. So much so that his honeymoon ends early when he breaks his nose in an accident. Deepika eventually comes clean and says that she wanted to tell Arjun earlier, but her mother stopped her. Plus, she never knew that Arjun was a light sleeper. Arjun says that he loves Deepika and is looking for a lifelong partnership. Eventually, on his friend's advice, Arjun decides to address the problem with an understanding and initially things seem fine. Deepika has some extra flesh inside her nose, due to which she snores. But when ENT specialists say it's not treatable, he starts arguing with Deepika. Arjun has slept for 2 night straight and says that for him his 8 hours of daily sleep is very critical. He then comes up with an idea of alternating sleep, so whoever's not sleeping has to be awake. Deepika suggests that Arjun's light sleep might be a psychological issue and suggests meeting a psychiatrist for the same. Arjun is offended and says that his light sleep is not a mental illness, while Deepika feels that Arjun does not want to deal with his problems. Deepika learns that Lakshmi had a love marriage. Shanmugam was an accountant at her father's company. Things went OK till they got married, but after that they used to fight about everything. She says that finding a middle ground in marriage is a really tough thing to do, and that a husband and wife should understand each other, no matter how bad things are. Everything goes fine and eventually Arjun gets a job as newsreader at his dream company. But things go south when he doesn't sleep on the day there is a last-minute interview with the finance minister (Aroul D. Shankar). He prepares for it but ends up sleeping in the bathroom, missing the show, being humiliated by his colleagues and fired. Angry, Arjun decides to apply for divorce, much to Deepika's dismay. The judge disagrees with Arjun to grant a divorce for Deepika's snoring. She puts the case into mediation for 3 sessions. Deepika is clear that she wants to forget about the divorce proceedings and to move on with her life. Everyone else disagrees and tries to pull him out of it, but he won't budge, resulting in him arguing with his brother and mother and leaving the house, living with his friend, Panda (Abdool Lee). The lawyer says that getting a divorce on the basis of snoring is difficult and asks Arjun to claim that Deepika is having an affair with someone. But Arjun refuses to smear Deepika's reputation like this. Deepika reveals she's pregnant, however adamant with his decision, Arjun decides to raise the baby separately. Deepika is upset and decides to abort the baby, despite Arjun trying to talk her out of it. Deepika's mother is worried that if she drops the baby, there will be no chance for Arjun and Deepika to reconcile in the future. A few months later, Arjun and Deepika are still in the middle of divorce proceedings. Arjun is unemployed, unkempt and resorting to drinking and smoking. At one point, Arjun comes to see his mother, but she gets heart pain and is hospitalized. While she is going through bypass surgery, his mother wishes to see her husband, Shanmugam (Thalaivasal Vijay), who left after accumulating loads of debt. Lakshmi had recently received a letter from Shanmugam which indicated that he wanted to meet his family. Deepika was under guilty feeling that her divorce was the reason for Lakshmi's heart condition. Deepika wants to go search for him and pleads Arjun to do so, as Saravana holds a limitless grudge against his father. They track him to Idukki. Shanmugan is hesitant to return after so many years, but this is when Arjun loses his cool and says that the family was abandoned by Shanmugam and will do without him even now. He says he will tell Lakshmi that Shanmugam is dead. Arjun reveals to Deepika that his light sleep problem started after Shanmugam left home. After convincing Arjun, Deepika brings Shanmugam back to see Lakshmi, all are happy except Saravana, as he lost trust in him. Saravana is livid that the decision to bring back Shanmugam was taken without consulting him. Saravana gets shouted at by his mother, who reveals he made other decisions all by himself without asking anyone, such as Kalpana's love for writing stories. Eventually, Shanmugam and Saravana patch up and on the final day of hearing, Arjun and Deepika talks through and eventually cancel their divorce. A Couple years later, Arjun and Deepu have a baby, as he's reading them a story, Deepu points out that the baby is snoring, they both laugh and live happily.
