This Brazilian melodrama tells the story of young Cristina (Vanessa Alves ), a guileless country girl who gets herself knocked up in her first sexual encounter with a neighboring farm boy. Her father, outraged that she won't marry the lad, throws her out of the house. At her mother's urging, she goes to Sao Paulo to live with her older sister, Carla (AlvamarTaddei), who happens to be a low-life streetwalker with a brute of a boyfriend/pimp. When Carla sizes up the situation, she tosses her useless pregnant sister out on the street. Fortunately for Cristina, a kind-hearted transvestite hooker named Lili (Romeu de Freitas) takes pity on the girl, and allows her to move in. When the baby is born, it turns out to have a birth defect that will require costly surgery -- something no one can afford. Cristina's doctor (Helena Ramos ) refers her to her painter boyfriend (André Loureiro) to work as a nude model -- knowing the girl has that special aura he's long been seeking. Although he pays an especially generous sitting fee, it isnt enough to cover her son's operation. Consequently, Cristina gives in to her conniving sister's offer to work as a high-priced call girl. Her first 'date' convinces her that this life isn't for her. At the same time, however, her modeling job appears to be quits, since the painting is finished. But then Carlos, the painter, declares his undying love -- giving Cristina all the modeling work she can handle. He also pledges the necessary funds for her son's surgery. Everyone is gloriously happy -- except poor Doctor Laura, who's lost the love of her life to Cristina, and the unfortunate Lili, who pays the ultimate price for crossing Carla's pimp.
