The Children's Ark is an epic adventure and love story about a reluctant American hero who, against all odds, was able to save eight hundred children from the ravages of war by taking them around the world on a ship, and back home to their parents. By 1918 the Russian Civil War had intensified. St. Petersburg was facing hard times. Groups of children were transported to the safe countryside of the Ural Mountains summer camp. But then civil war spread unexpectedly, making it impossible for the children to return home. Riley H. Allen is the suave, selfish, and witty editor-in-chief of Hawaii's largest newspaper. But the humdrum of paradise has become his hell. Desperate to find a story that will get him the next Pulitzer prize, Riley shrewdly volunteers for the American Red Cross and is sent to a post in the bone numbing cold of Vladivostok, a South-Eastern port city in Siberia. Amid his search, Riley stumbles across a heartbreaking discovery - the 800 starving children, stranded, thousands of miles from home; with only their angelic teacher, Natalia, having remained by their side. Riley saves them, and makes it his story, but soon the childrens lives are once again in danger. Once driven by selfish ambitions, Riley is now driven to fulfill his promise to bring the children back home - but all the railroad tracks have been incapacitated by war. With no others options left, he commissions a Japanese cargo ship and has it retrofitted to accommodate the Russian children, American Red Cross staff, and a Japanese crewThey set sail across the Pacific, stopping in Japan, San Francisco, and down through the Panama Canal. The children have a profound impact on everyone they meet. When they arrive to New York, theyre greeted like celebrities by thousands of people. On the ship, limited space, storms, cultural tensions and the death of a child threatens the mission from within, while on land, dirty international politics and the vicious machinations of the Bolshevik Party conspire to derail Rileys efforts, forcing him to reach deep within himself to make things work out.
