During the London Blitz in 1940, nightclub singer Vera Phillips (Keira Knightley) entertains crowds who are hiding from German bombing raids in the shelters of the London underground. Vera runs into her first love, charismatic Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys). Dylan still has feelings for Vera and the first thing he does when he sees her is to kiss her on the mouth. Dylan and Vera grew up together in their hometown. Dylan claims that he shares everything of his with Vera, but all he does under the guise is to take money from Vera for his own splurges. Dylan is now married to Caitlin Macnamara (Sienna Miller), with whom he has a son. Dylan is a poet at heart, but nobody needs rhymes at the time of war. Dylan reads some of his poems on the BBC home service just to remain relevant. Caitlin is sexy looking and enjoys the attention of men when she steps out of the house. They are out of money and so the son stays with Caitlin's mother, while Dylan and Caitlin stay with her sister Nicolette (Camilla Rutherford) in London. Even so, Dylan does not seem to be very connected to his own son. But in their own way, Dylan and Caitlin are still very passionate about each other. They fight, but then they makeup during the fight and have sex. Dylan has an unsteady job working for Anita Shenkin (Anne Lambton), providing commentary for silent war propaganda films. Dylan and Vera rekindle feelings for one another. Vera is shocked when she meets Caitlin for the first time and Dylan never told her that he is now married. Dylan tells Vera that they are soulmates and that nothing should be allowed to come between them. The two women, initially rivals, become best friends. Drinking heavily in wartime London, the three come to get along. Caitlin says that Vera is one of the people who never got over their first love. William Killick (Cillian Murphy), a British Army officer, begins to pursue Vera. Both Vera and Caitlin are intrigued by his steadfast, gallant personality despite its contrasts with Vera's rebelliousness. William is not like the other army boys and is very respectful of Vera's feelings. Vera rejects his advances to begin with and William backs off every time. But he is persistent. Dylan and Caitlin are kicked out by Nicolette when Dylan urinates inside their house on the carpet after a drunken night, instead of using the pot meant for the facilities. They move in with Vera, as there is nowhere else to go. Caitlin finds Dylan staring at Vera while she is sleeping and warns him not to touch her, as she is her friend. Caitlin confides in Vera that she feels dissatisfied as nobody is nurturing her talent and all she does is cook and clean for Dylan. William tries to kiss Vera, but she backs away. William says that Vera only thinks that she loves Dylan. William says that he is not married, which ought to give them an advantage over Dylan. William notices Vera's closeness to Dylan but doesn't appear concerned. He and Vera even lend the struggling poet some of their savings. Vera eventually has sex with William after a party they attended was bombed in a German aerial raid. Dylan has no option but to watch the affair turn into love. Caitlin can sense this and offers her own body to Dylan. William and Vera fall in love and marry. Caitlin warns Vera that she will forgive the past between Dylan and her, but not the future. Soon afterwards, William is called up to fight against the German invasion of Greece after the Italians failed. Shortly after William's departure, Vera discovers she is pregnant. Upset that motherhood will take away her independence, she contemplates aborting the child but cannot bring herself to do so. She gives birth to a son and moves to the Welsh seashore with Dylan and Caitlin to raise their children in two small neighboring cottages. Vera and Caitlin's friendship grows stronger while Dylan and Caitlin's marriage becomes distorted by multiple infidelities. Once again Caitlin warns Vera against an affair with Dylan, and she promises that she would never lie to her. Dylan draws Vera into an affair with him. The whole town witnesses and has sympathy for William, who is fighting for his country, while Dylan feeds on his wife. Caitlin gets pregnant with someone else's child. She asks Vera for money for an abortion, which she gives. William returns as captain, scarred by the horrors of the war. Vera notices his emotional distance and instability. William suspects his wife of infidelity after he finds that Vera had virtually emptied their joint bank account and confronts her. He says that the entire town speculates that it's Dylan's child and not his. Vera confesses to both William and Caitlin, who are furious with her. One evening, while severely inebriated and angry with Dylan's friends for their ignorant remarks on the war, William wanders outside and fires multiple shots into Dylan and Caitlin's home. He does not hit anyone, and Vera calms him down. The next morning, William seemed to have returned to his former self. But Caitlin tells Dylan that they have no money left and no source of income, since William won't allow Vera to give any. Based on Dylan's complaint, William is arrested and taken to trial. During the trial, Dylan testifies against William and distorts the facts, claiming that William was sober and intended to kill Dylan, Caitlin, and their child. The jury finds William innocent of intent to murder. Dylan says he lied for Vera. Vera dares him to leave Caitlin, which Dylan is unwilling to do. Vera reminds him that he doesn't love Vera, but an idea of Vera, which only William had made real. After returning home, William accepts his new role as a father, and he and Vera forgive each other. Their relationship improves. Soon afterwards, Dylan and Caitlin move out of their cottage. During the farewell, Vera restores her friendship with Caitlin, but she never speaks to Dylan again, unable to forgive him for testifying against her husband.
