The Forbidden Aunt
Dubbed in : SER ( Original ) , English
An actress documents her enigmatic Serbian aunt's story, revealing family secrets and personal history in a dark comedy exploring female trauma across generations. In a world overflowing with soap operas, one Serbian family shows that reality is wilder, darker, and far more gripping than fiction. After a gut-wrenching breakup, actress-turned-filmmaker Bojana Novakovic leaves the dazzling world of Hollywood and heads to rural Serbia, hoping to reconnect with her eccentric, estranged Aunt Gordana for some much-needed peace. But what Bojana doesn't anticipate is the storm that will pull her into a whirlwind of family secrets, forcing her to confront the hidden trauma that's shaped 4 generations of women in her family. Gordana Ladjevac was a whirlwind of her own; vibrant, rebellious, and fiercely independent. By fourteen, she was a hairdresser; by nineteen, a wife and mother; by twenty-four, a struggling alcoholic; and by thirty, a divorcee and widow. Yet, she still ran the most successful salon in Uzice, became the life of every party, and found solace in dating, drinking, and binge-watching Turkish soap operas. Eventually she got sober and redeemed herself by looking after old people. Bojana, living in LA, romanticized her aunt's life as a story of survival against all odds. Inspired by Hollywood's redemptive arcs, she set out to capture Gordana's transformation. But as Bojana dives deeper into her family's past, she uncovers devastating truths and buried trauma. The documentary transforms from a hopeful portrait to a raw journey through generational pain, addiction, and healing. The Forbidden Aunt is an emotional roller coaster that unearths deep family secrets, ultimately reshaping the way these women understand each other, and themselves.
