The Girl Can't Help It
Former Hollywood top agent Tom Miller (Tom Ewell) drinks to forget about Julie London (playing herself), whom he made into a star and still loves. Miller has not discovered new talent for some time when ex-slot machine king Marty 'Fats' Murdock (Edmond O'Brien) hires him to make a star out of his girlfriend Jerri Jordan (Jayne Mansfield). Murdock explains his reason by quoting, "I can't marry a nobody." Murdock turns Jerri over to Miller, but sternly reminds him "Hands off." Jerri Jordan is a sweet, statuesque blonde who goes along with Murdock's plans because she is grateful to him for helping her father when they were prison mates. But she confides in Miller that she was wants out of life is to be a wife and mother. Taking full advantage of Jerri's stunning figure, Miller devises a plan by which every nightclub owner in town notices her... and wants to book her without every knowing if she has any talent. Miller soon discovers that Jerri has no talent at all; her singing is especially bad, as her off-key voice can make glass shatter. Miller tells Murdock that they have no chance to make Jerri a star, but Murdock refuses to be swayed. However, as Murdock realizes that most singing stars of the day don't have trained voices, he arranges for Jerri to record a song he wrote while in prison called 'Rock around the Rock Pile'. While Ray Anthony and his band provide the vocals and instruments, all Jerri must contribute is a scream that sounds like a police siren. Jerri and Miller (who has forgotten about Julie London at this point) begin to fall in love with each other, but decide not to tell Murdock, to whom they both feel indebted. Miller continues to try to make Jerri into a star. He tries to get Wheeler (John Emery), known as the jukebox king, to sign Jerri to a recording contract. But Wheeler remembers his long-term rivalry with Murdock and promises to keep Jerri's record from being played. Murdock, with his thug/accomplice Mousie (Henry Jones), pressures jukebox owners to replace Wheeler's jukeboxes with his own. Consequently, 'Rock Around the Rock Pile' becomes a big hit, and Jerri finally becomes an overnight star. At a rock 'n' roll concert, Jerri sings Miller a love song, and turns out that she can sing after all. (It is revealed that she had only been pretending that she couldn't sing so that she wouldn't have to pursue a show business career. After her song, Wheeler chases Murdock onto the stage, vowing revenge for having all his jukeboxes broken. Murdock ends up singing his own version of 'Rock Around the Rock Pile' and the audience love him so much that Wheeler decides to sign him up for a recording contract instead of murdering him. Murdock finally realizes that Jerri and Miller have fallen in love. Instead of being angry, he asks to Miller's best man at the upcoming wedding. So, Jerri becomes Miller's wife and has several kids, and Murdock ends up becoming a rock 'n' roll star.
