Set in the late 19th century of rural wild west Utah, bounty hunter Willet Grashade (Warren Oates) returns to camp. His not very smart friend Coley (Will Hutchins) tells him that he has been hold up there for two days. Coin, Grashade's brother, has gotten drunk in the nearby town of Winslow and has run down a small boy. Coin's partner, Leland Drum, has been shot in the back by an unknown assailant. Coley gets Grashade have his gun so he won't get into trouble. Both men are paranoid. The next day, a shot rings out. The discover a mysterious woman (Millie Perkins) outside of camp. She has killed her horse although Grashade sees nothing wrong with it. She offers Grashade $1,000 to take her Kingsley to find the man who killed her child. Although Grashade doesn't like or trust the woman, he accepts the offer. He hopes to find out what happened to Coin. Grashade, Coley and the woman (who refuses to give her name) travel on horseback towards the town of Crosstree. They squabble the entire time. After leaving Crosstree, where Grashade learns that Coin has been seen, the three travelers move through the desert. The woman flirts with Coley. Grashade tells her to leave his friend alone. He can tell the she is sending signals to someone following them. Finally gunslinger Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson) emerges from hiding. He joins the group. Billy and Coley are constantly threatening each other. Grashade tells Coley not to rile Billy because Billy would love the opportunity to kill him. The woman's horse dies. Coley gives his horse to her and rides with Grashade. But Billy orders Coley to dismount. Coley is left behind. The come upon an acquaintance of the woman who is stranded in the desert with a broken leg. He tells her that her prey is only a day away. She leaves him some water and goes on. Coley snares the man's horse and charges at Billy, who guns him down. The woman is upset that Billy did this. Grashade sadly buries his friend. The trio's journey quietly begins to die down. Their horses all die. They all run out of water. Grashade and Billy brutally fight in the sand. Grashade beats up Billy and crushes his gun hand with a large rock. When the woman runs off, Grashade follows her into the nearby rocks. There they spot the man who killed her child. He turns around and looks almost exactly like Grashade. It is Coin, Grashade's twin brother. Coin shoots and kills both Grashade and the woman while they shoot at him. Note; it is hard to tell if Coin is also hit and killed. The final scene shows Billy walking around aimlessly in the desert.
