A Turkish consul travels to a Soviet city in the worst times of Stalinism. There, he falls in love with his secretary, a fervent communist. Batum, Georgia in 1930s, the height of the Stalinist dictatorship. Times are hard and the political situation couldn't be worse as the Turkish consul takes up his new position here. His own situation is not easy either. He cannot speak the language, nor does he understand the Communist system and his predecessor died under mysterious circumstances. In fact, the only reason why he is able to cope at all with the adverse conditions of his new life is Sonia, his young secretary, with whom he falls madly in love. But there is a problem with their relationship: since she is a staunch member of the Young Communists' Organisation, she refuses to tolerate his constant criticisms of the Russian regime. She too, however, has her worries. The plan to poison her boss, little by little, goes wrong because even she finds that she is no longer in control of her feelings. Her passion grows and her communist ideals begin to waver. Too Iate, however, for a happy end.
