A jewel thief and a con artist are rivals in the theft of a valuable gem as the Japanese army invades China. The best-laid plans of jewel thief Gable and lady crook Russell fall apart when the thief unintentionally becomes a hero while posing as a British officer. —Ed Stephan <stephan@cc.wwu.edu> Gerald Meldrick and Anya Von Duren are career criminals/con artists. Unaware of the other, they meet for the first time when they both converge on the Viceroy Hotel in Bombay for the Empire Day celebrations for the same purpose: to rob one of the guests, the Duchess of Beltravers, of the Star of Asia, a jewel set in a pendant with an estimated worth of $1 million. Anya plans to masquerade as a Baroness to be able to infiltrate the Duchess' social circle. Gerald plans on masquerading as a detective representing Lloyd's of London to protect any of their insured items at the hotel, including the Star of Asia. Gerald has taken his plan even one step further than Anya in having had created a fake pendant to replace the Star of Asia, the fake which would not be immediately noticed. What happens with their plans and between them is affected by: each discovering that the other is not who he/she purports to be; Gerald's immediate attraction to her; and the world war becoming even more global in their presence. —Huggo In India, Gerald Meldrich, a smooth jewel thief has met his match, Anya Van Duran, a female jewel thief. After both ruin each others plan to steal the royal pendant--they decide to join forces. Are two thieves better than one? —Kelly
