Things from Another World
Welcome To the Punch relates the story of a former English criminal Jacob Sternwood (Mark Strong), who comes out of hiding in Iceland, in an effort to save his son Ruan Sternwood (Elyes Gabel) when a heist goes wrong. Sternwood is the one man that London detective Max Lewinsky (James McAvoy) has always been after. During their cat-and-mouse game, the two become unlikely allies, working together to expose a deeper conspiracy. Jacob was a robber in London & Max was assigned his case. Four gunmen emerge from a building in gas masks after a robbery and leave on motorbikes. DI Max Lewinsky sets off in pursuit of the gang in his car. He fails to catch them and suffers an injury after being shot in the leg by Jacob Sternwood, who could have easily killed him. 3 years later Lewinsky suffers from his wound and has to use drugs for the pain. He works with DS Sarah Hawks, with whom he is on good terms. Ruan is on an airplane, shot in the abdomen when he runs & jumps off the stationary aircraft & makes a call to Jacob before he is arrested. The newspapers describe Ruan & his accomplice Otis Blake as being involved in gun crime when they were shot by the police. Max & Sarah Hawks (Andrea Riseborough) are partners. They have arrested Dean Warns (Johnny Harris) in connection with the Otis Blake shooting at the docks, but he is allowed to walk by Max's seniors Commander Thomas Geiger (David Morrissey) and DCI Nathan Bartnick (Daniel Mays) as Warns alibi holds up. A security guard said he saw Warns in a container yard in connection with the offense but has retracted his statement. Max learns that Jacob's son, Ruan, has collapsed on an aircraft runway while travelling under an alias and has been hospitalized. Ruan called an Icelandic landline number before he collapsed, leading a police task-force to journey to Iceland to find Jacob. Max has no faith in this idea, but the police ignore his doubts. They surround Jacob's property, but he escapes and detonates a booby trap bomb that kills several policemen. Max suggests that Ruan's location be made public to draw Jacob out of hiding and offers to stay in the hospital with Sarah to await Jacob's appearance. Max personally takes control of Ruan's guard as he knows Jacob will show up. Jacob goes to the hospital to confirm his son's situation and leaves without being caught. But Ruan dies of cardiac arrest. But this is not revealed on the off-chance that Jacob will return. Max tracks down the security guard who retracted his statement, thinking that Jacob may have forced him to do so, but the guard refuses to help. Karen Edwards (Danielle Brent) is a press reporter & is leading Thomas's campaign to become the Mayor of the city on the promise of controlling gun crime. Jacob visits the hotel where Ruan was staying & finds a bloody shirt & a sack of money hidden in the AC vent. Jacob uses his underworld connections to advertise that Ruan was staying at the Gregomar hotel. Max finds that the Warns' witness was given money to retract his statement. Max hears the word on the underworld & arrives at the Gregomar hotel where Jacob has just killed an intruder & escaped. One of the intruders was Bartnick & the other was another cop, Harvey Crown (Jason Flemyng). Max finds Harvey dead & figures that the 2nd intruder was Bartnick, through his glasses that were left behind at the hotel. Meanwhile Sarah follows Warns, without telling Max. She finds Warns at the docks in a shipping container. She searches at night & finds the container & is horrified at its contents. Warns finds Sarah snooping & kills her. Jacob calls Bartnick, who fixes a meeting to "explain who shot Ruan". Thomas, having tapped the phone call, informs Max about the meeting. Once at the location Jacob & Max are attacked by Bartnick & Warns. Bartnick is fatally shot by Jacob. Jacob protects Max, but, after the gunfight, Max attacks Jacob. Jacob overpowers him and demands to be taken to see his son. Max complies without revealing that Ruan is dead. At the hospital mortuary, Jacob is heartbroken and incensed by his son's death. Whilst at the hospital's mortuary, Max discovers that Sarah is dead when he comes across her body on a stretcher. They trace down Warns's family, hold them hostage & force Warns to cooperate against Thomas. Jacob and Max confront Warns at his house and say they know about his collaboration with Thomas and the details of the gun running. After a shootout, Warns is taken prisoner and forced to contact Geiger to arrange a meeting at "The Punch", a section of the container yard. Max and Jacob force Warns to go with them to the meeting. Thomas arrives at the docks & is shot at by Jacob. He confesses that Sarah & Warns worked for a military contractor, who wanted to see Thomas elected Mayor. Mayor Thomas had promised more firearms for the police, which would come from the contractor. To discredit his opponent, Thomas had Warns bring in an illegal cache of firearms to sell to kids, who would later be arrested, which would lead to another big gun control scandal for the incumbents. But when Otis & Ruan showed up at the docks to buy guns, Otis recognized Harvey as the cop who arrested him a year ago. So, Harvey shot Otis, but Ruan escaped with money & a gunshot wound. Max blames Thomas for Sarah's death and accuses him of complicity in the arms deal among other criminal dealings. Thomas admits "turning a blind eye" on many occasions and implicates a high-ranking minister, Kincade. Suddenly armed military contractors from Kincade opened fire. Max kills Warns, and Jacob kills Thomas. Max and Jacob face each other. Max raises his gun but recalling the earlier time when Jacob deliberately did not kill him, allows him to flee. As Jacob escapes, Max presents himself to the arriving police.
