To Have and to Hold
Former FinCEN director Raymond King (J. K. Simmons) meets with the mysterious assassin Anais (Daniella Pineda) to ask her help locating a Salvadorean family, offering only a dated photo of the parents and their young son. Anais does not respond to the offer, she does not even look at the photo, but warns King he has been followed. In fact, the assassins led by Cobb, and reporting to his boss Burke, were tracking both King and Anais. King talks to Anais about her acquired savant syndrome. Acquired savant syndrome is a rare condition where extraordinary skills emerge in an individual after a brain injury, illness, or trauma, such as a head injury or stroke. These newly developed abilities can manifest in unpredictable areas. King is killed in the ensuing gunfight while Anais walks away unscathed. King's protege and current director of FinCEN / Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), identifies his body, sees "find the accountant" written on his arm, and decides to take up the case. Marybeth goes to the apartment that was rented by King and finds all his research. She finds the photo of a particular family (with a father, a mother and a son) in his belongings and also the contact details for Christian Wolff. The number connects to Harbor Neuroscience, but the call is secretly monitored by Justine. Marybeth realizes that someone is listening to her call to the Harbor Neuroscience center and says that Raymond King is dead. This makes Justine take notice. Meanwhile Christian Wolff attends a blind date meeting conference, where the hosts claim to have used an algorithm to match profiles. Christian has women lining up around the block to meet him and reveals that he reverse engineered the algorithm and created a profile that mathematically gave him the highest score and the best probability of being matched by women of different personalities. But in reality, Christian is not nearly as interesting, and all the women leave after talking for a brief while with him. Medina, despite being mistrustful of Christian Wolff's (Ben Affleck) illegal activities, asks him for help finding the family in the photo. She says that 3 men were found dead at the location where King was killed. All 3 were ex-Chilean special forces and King was not capable of killing them, which means he was meeting someone who did kill the 3 men. Wolff organizes a collage of information found in King's apartment which shows that the family in the photo fled from El Salvador to Los Angeles, encountering various hazards along the way. Wolff pieces together the various documents and concludes that the name of the woman is Edith Sanchez. Edith had filed tax returns in the US, with the first 2 years of income around \$15,000 each, but the 3rd year was around \$60,250. She checked married in the tax return but filed separately. Had she filed jointly, she could have availed of child and dependent care exemptions. Wolff then cross checks all of King's clients in the last 6 months and only one had a Latino name: Emiliano Gonzalez. Emiliano seems to be Edith's father and had reported Edith missing 7 years ago. He was found dead in his apartment when Marybeth tried to contact him. His son Gino was found dead in a mafia style grave dug for people who cannot be sold or trafficked. Wolff and Marybeth check out a pizza factory, where Edith used to work. Wolff quickly works out that the owner of the pizza place Ike Sudio (Michael Tourek) is laundering money as the inventories and supplies he disclosed in his taxes did not match the income he generated from the business. Wolff determines that Ike was laundering money and that Tomas (Lombardo Boyar) was his local contact. Cobb (Grant Harvey), the man tasked with killing Anais and King, informs his supervisor Burke (Robert Morgan), who tells him to continue pursuing Anais, lest she realize what Burke did to her. Christian invites his estranged brother, Braxton (Jon Bernthal), still an assassin, to help with the case. Working together Wolff and Braxton track down Tomas, who is into trafficking women from Juarez into the US and pressing them into prostitution. Braxton beats Tomas into submission and puts him into the trunk of Marybeth's car. Justine (Allison Robertson), Christian's non-speaking autistic business partner at Harbor Neuroscience, still residing at the New Hampshire compound where she met Christian, works with a group of autistic children to hack into different technologies to help Christian. They establish that Anais met with King on the night of his murder and that she walked out of the bar in a very calm and composed way, indicating that she was not afraid. The group has advanced hacking skills. They manage to hack into the laptop of a woman who happened to take a selfie when Anais walked by on the streets. Anais was very careful to hide her face from the street cameras, but the selfie caught her unawares. Their group manages to find a photo of Anais but are unable to identify her. Uncomfortable with their illegal methods, Medina breaks from the group. She interrogates Tomas, who admits that Ike Sudio was into money laundering. Tomas identifies the woman in the picture as one who was trafficked, but also someone who had a car accident 5 years ago. Before Tomas can reveal anything else, he is shot down by Burke's assassin with a long-range rifle. Meanwhile, Wolff's hackers also investigate Anais and figure out the same things about her and find the hospital she was admitted to after her car accident. Medina visits a hospital mentioned in one of King's reports, where she discovers Anais is actually the mother from the photo. Anais was earlier involved in a car accident, causing brain damage, loss of memory and acquired savant syndrome, which includes intense combat skills. Her entire face was reconstructed due to her extensive facial injuries and as such she did not look like herself when she came in. Batu (Andrew Howard), a contractor for hit-men, is visited by Braxton and Wolff. Braxton wants Batu to divulge the identity of Anais. Batu sets a contract for Medina which Braxton rejects. He later gets a message confirming that the job has been accepted by another assassin. Wolff later sees the message on Braxton's phone, realizes there is a hit on Medina and arrives after she has been wounded by Anais. Justine tells Wolff that King was not murdered because he was looking for Edith, he was murdered because he had found her, and it was Anais. At Medina's, Anais sees the old photo of her family and regains some of her memories, discovering that Burke was the one who had imprisoned her and murdered her husband in Juarez. Braxton and Christian realize that Anais's still-living, autistic son Alberto is being held captive at a prison camp in Juarez with other children of trafficking victims, separated from their families. Burke knows that Anais has been found as Edith, and it is a matter of time before the trail reaches Juarez. He orders Cobb to take the kids into the desert and bury them after killing them. They assault the compound and manage to save Alberto and the rest of the children after killing Cobb and the other guards. Justine blackmails Batu into canceling his contract on Medina. Justine tips off Anais to Burke's hiding spot and she kills him. Justine and the autistic children prepare to welcome Alberto to their facility in New Hampshire, and Braxton and Christian discuss going on a brotherly hiking trip.
