Tomorrow's Game
Alex Lewis is not someone you easily forget. This film tells the story of a man whose life was transformed at the age of 33 when he contracted Strep A. He tells us how it ravaged his body and how he survived almost certain death thanks to a high-risk intervention by the consultant doctor. Alive, but physically impaired, he lost all his limbs leaving a self-confessed heavy drinker, who was lazy, unadventurous and a poor father to a 3yr old son to face life as a quadruple amputee. A few years later and there's been a change in mindset, a rebuilding of family relationships and a joyful reawakening to life's possibilities. His energy and enthusiasm reveals a man happier without arms and legs and hell bent on living life to the full. His only hurdle is mobility. A chance conversation leads to masters students at Southampton University offering to design and build the world's first, off-road, solar-powered hand cycle for a quadruple amputee and within weeks an expedition is being planned to cross one of the planet's toughest mountain trails to reach Ethiopia's highest peak. From the very start of the project through to the final moments on the mountaintop, the film follows Alex as he sets out to prove to himself, his son and the rest of the world that anything is possible. We witness young Ethiopian woman and double amputee Emebet Ale become part of the challenge and then together with Alex and an international support team battle through the UNESCO World Heritage wilderness of The Simien Mountains. Enduring 10 gruelling days in an environment alien to them both, they struggle with the high altitude extremes and exposed rocky trails before facing a near vertical cliff to reach the 4550m peak of Ras Dashen. Questioning whether self-belief and the power of the human spirit is enough to overcome the greatest of challenges, the film bears witness to two ordinary people whose efforts redefine what we think is possible and challenges us all to face our own hurdles with the same courage and strength.
