Toren: Back to Roots
Toren, follows three generations of a Yazidi family who fled genocide and found refuge in Georgia. Toren, the grandson and a gifted artist, faces illness and inner turmoil as a new wave of ISIS-led violence threatens his people once again. After surviving the genocide against Armenians and Yazidis, the Toren family embarks on a generational journey of survival and identity. Born in Georgia, Toren (26), a gifted but tormented painter, grapples with existential questions and a fractured sense of self. Raised by his grandparents after losing his parents, Toren struggles between creative brilliance and inner chaos. His rising success in art does little to quiet the darkness within, especially as he battles a life-threatening illness, echoing the existential dilemma of Hamlet: To be or not to be. A chance encounter with Eka (24), a Georgian doctor, becomes a turning point. Their love offers hope, but cultural and religious differences pose a major challenge. Inspired by his ancestors' strength and stories, Toren begins a journey back to his roots, awakening a deep longing to reconnect with his heritage and defend his endangered culture. As the family prepares to return to their ancestral land in Iraq, fate strikes a tragic blow: a new wave of genocide, this time by ISIS, threatens to erase what remains of the Yazidi people. —Director and Producer Nawzad Shekhany
