Mark and Joanna Wallace (Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn) are a married English couple driving their Mercedes to the French Riviera to attend a party at the home of Maurice Dalbret (Claude Dauphin), the man who gave Mark his first break as an architect. Mark and Joanna are at odds over their marriage and it seems to be at the breaking point. As they flew across the English Channel, Joanna saw a boat which triggers memories of their first meeting 12 years ago. When Mark and Joanna first met, he was a young architect full of idealism and full of himself. He as backpacking across Europe to study buildings. Joanna was a music student traveling to a festival with a group of girls. Mark had his heart set on Jackie (Jackie Bisset), another girl in the group who was Joanna's best friend. However, Mark ended up hiking off with Joanna by default... after everyone else came down with chicken pox. Mark and Joanna fell in love and when they reached the Mediterranean they decided to get married rather than go their separate ways as previously planned. Mark and Joanna next returned to Europe as newlyweds on their honeymoon. They made the huge mistake of taking their vacation with Howard and Cathy Manchester (William Daniels and Eleanor Bron) (Cathy happened to be Mark's ex-girlfriend), and their daughter Ruthie (Gabrielle Middleton). After tangling with Ruthie, Joanna stated: I still want a child. I just don't want THAT child." Holding their vow to travel alone together from then on, Joanna and Mark took their third eventual European trip. Joanna announced that she was pregnant and Mark first met Maurice Dalbret, who elevated Mark from an architect of bus shelters to an architect of Mediterranean villas. On a business trip alone while Joanna was pregnant at home, Mark was filled with feelings of success and self-importance and indulged in a one-night stand. The indulgence ruptured their relationship and they grew apart with a succession of bitter arguments. The strain drove Joanna into an affair with David (Georges Descrieres), a serious-minded Frenchman. She eventually returned to Mark because the Frenchman was "so serious." By returning, Joanna caused them to re-examine their marriage and their lives together. Mark and Joanna ultimately realized that regardless of the differences, the pettiness, the arguments, they have developed a deep need for each other. After finding out that David is engaged, they leave Maurice's party together. In the final scene, as Mark and Joanna cross the border into the next country, the exchange one of the many private jokes they share when Joanna bursts one of Mark's flights of pompous rage: Mark calls Joanna a "bitch, and Joanna calls Mark a "bastard". They kiss and pass over the border.
