Whose Dog Am I?
It is the first day of senior year for best friends and cheerleaders Dallas and Gabby. Dallas is excited and seems happy but she is concerned about her upcoming audition for the California Institute of the Arts, or Cal Arts as she calls it. Dallas lost both her parents and lives with her brother Nathan, the new football coach at her school. Her mother was a talented ballerina who also studied at Cal Arts, and Dallas wants to be a classical dancer as well. The school's new star quarterback Drayton walks into English class late, which is okay because he can get away with anything. Dallas did not do the summer reading assignment, and Mr. Douglas calls on her to state her thoughts on "Romeo and Juliet". She struggles to say what everyone knows about the Shakespeare tragedy, but she didn't even know they died until someone pointed out the ending a few minutes later. Drayton gives his own opinion of the story. Leroy, Drayton's wealthy father, walks into Nathan's office and asks for assurance his son will get plenty of playing time because Drayton is destined for greatness in college, if not the NFL. Later, the cheerleaders and the football team are practicing at the same time. Drayton asks about Dallas and is told the coach is her brother. After practice, Drayton flirts with Dallas, who isn't interested. He calls her "Cheer" while she calls him "Quarterback". Another player throws the ball to Drayton, who bumps into Dallas' car, knocking the side mirror off. Offered a ride while her car is being fixed, Dallas asks to be taken to dance class. After class, teacher Miss Alicia says Dallas isn't ready for Cal Arts and that she will have to work harder to get in. Dallas is reluctant to waste time since she has school, dance class, cheerleading and even a job. Still, Gabby persuades her to attend a party, and Drayton is there, trying again to get Dallas to date him. Gabby is attracted to Drayton's adopted brother Josh. Dallas challenges Drayton to a game of beer pong, and Drayton agrees on the condition water is used instead. Drayton says if he wins, she must go out with him. If he loses, he will never bother her again. He loses. Dallas gets drunk, and while Gabby leaves the party early, Dallas assures her she can get home. Dallas walks home in the dark but the road is unfamiliar and she has no cell service. Drayton shows up on his motorcycle and offers her a ride. Dallas realizes she can't go home drunk, so Drayton takes her to his family's mansion, where she and he sleep apart. The next morning Leroy chastises his son for the first of several times in the movie, and reminds him once again he will go to Waco and be their star quarterback. Drayton's mother sees Dallas and sneaks her out of the house, while Dallas tries to assure her nothing happened. Gabby is disappointed to learn nothing happened but smiles when she learns Dallas may be attracted to Drayton. The players and cheerleaders share the bus for a road game. Drayton and Dallas end up sitting together but Dallas is still not interested in him. After the game there is a party but Dallas doesn't want to go. She is at a vending machine when Drayton shows up and says he doesn't want to go to the party either. Drayton persuades her to go somewhere else, and Dallas changes into a hot dress Gabby got her to wear. They go to a club with salsa dancing, which Dallas really likes. She tries to teach Drayton but he isn't that good. Back at the motel, Mr. Douglas and Nathan are upset to find out what Dallas and Drayton did. Nathan was worried because his sister was missing. There will be consequences. With Drayton's parents and Nathan in the room, the principal decides Dallas and Drayton must be suspended. The principal has given Drayton a lot of leeway because of his football talent and his father's influence, but this incident cannot be ignored. Dallas asks not to be suspended because her chances of getting into Cal Arts are already quite limited, but the principal is not persuaded. Drayton's father, outside, tells him never to see Dallas again. But when has that ever stopped a romantic couple? Drayton shows up at Dallas' dance class where she is working with Miss Alicia one on one. Miss Alicia decides having Drayton there will help her improve, and it does. One of the problems Dallas has is that she can't afford to make the trip to Cal Arts to audition, and the audition will have to be a video. Drayton has the money to take her to Cal Arts, so they fly to California. Dallas is so excited to really be there, and she gets to watch a class. Drayton has his own plans which he doesn't tell Dallas about. He has already been told by Nathan to consider other schools, and two of the schools he is considering are nearby in California. Drayton and Dallas stay in a nice house at the beach and make a prank call to Josh. The relationship between Drayton and Dallas heats up, and they learn about each other and end up in bed together. Drayton tells Dallas about his twin sister Abigail who disappeared when they were eight. He thinks this is why he and his father don't get along. Josh was adopted after this. At Drayton's eighteenth birthday party things don't go well. Dallas feels Leroy doesn't truly accept her and she ends up leaving. As she is walking out, Drayton asks whether she is committed or not. Dallas tells Drayton they need to break up because the relationship won't last if they are separated in college. Dallas admits it is hard to think about losing someone else. Gabby is angry at Dallas when Dallas doesn't communicate with her for several weeks. Gabby was rejected by Princeton and really needed her friend. It turns out Nathan has the money to let Dallas travel to Cal Arts for her audition. When she does, one faculty member walks up to her afterward and says she is impressed. Dallas' mother, who was the woman's roommate when they went there as students, would be proud. Drayton has a conversation with his father that finally results in their relationship improving. Leroy admits he has been overprotective since Abigail disappeared, and now he is willing to let his son consider options other than Waco. Dallas and Gabby put aside their differences and go back to being best friends. Dallas and Drayton also make up and try to have the best relationship they can while they have time left. Several months later it is time to leave for college. Drayton makes a commitment over the phone to a college and his father says it's his decision where to go. Drayton then helps Dallas get ready to leave for Cal Arts. One day after she starts at Cal Arts, Dallas sees Drayton. Drayton finally reveals what he did when they visited California before. He says he is the new quarterback at USC. They kiss. Several times.
