A Nigerian born woman knows nothing of her birthplace until she meets a recently emigrated medical student, with whom she learns that culture is a force difficult to escape, even Overseas. Judith flees the Igbo osu caste system with her infant niece, Adhaobi. In the United States, Adhaobi is raised to be self reliant and doesn't question what she has been told about the death of her parents or why Aunt Judith avoids interaction with people from their birthplace in Nigeria.
