Cybertron is a technological world inhabited by sentient robots fueled by a substance called Energon and born with transformation cogs, organs that allow them to transform into vehicles. In the underground city of Iacon, Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth), a mining robot without a cog, sneaks into an archive to watch a documentary on the Primes, the first Cybertronians made by their creator Primus. Primus sacrificed his life-force and transformed himself into the planet Cybertron. The first Transformers came from Cybertron's core, who were known as the Primes. To assist the Primes, Primus created the Matrix of Leadership, an entity with great power. The Energon flowed with the power of the Matrix. Energon was the planet's power source and sustained life on the planet. For generations everything was peaceful, but then the Matrix of Leadership was lost an Energon stopped flowing. Security guards catch Orion, but his best friend, D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry), bails him out. Orion is convinced that the clues to finding the Matrix of Leadership are located in the archives. D-16 argues that Sentinel Prime is on the surface, dedicating his life to the search for the Matrix. D-16 is a big fan of Megtronus, the strongest Prime who ever lived. Later, a cave-in occurs in the Energon mine where the two work, trapping fellow miner Jazz (Evan Michael Lee). While Orion and D-16 save him, their callous overseer, Darkwing (Isaac C. Singleton Jr.), blames the incident on their superior, Elita-1 (Scarlett Johansson), and demotes her. Elita-1 is sent to the waste management section. Cybertron's leader, Sentinel Prime (Jon Hamm), returns from an expedition to the planet's surface to find the lost Matrix of Leadership, the absence of which caused Energon to stop flowing, thus forcing the miners to extract it. Sentinel reports that the surface of their planet is a dark and desolate place. Sentinel reminds everyone that it was 50 cycles ago that the Quintessons attacked and stole the Matrix of Leadership and killed the other Primes. Though unable to find it, he reprieves the population with a race called the Iacon 5000, a high-octane speed race all across Iacon city. All the population are given the day off and invited to view or participate in the race. To prove themselves more than miners and to prove that they can beat even a single Transformer, Orion enters himself and D-16 illegally using jet packs. The miner population of the planet was super excited to see 2 miners competing in the race, which had never happened before. Orion and D-16 work together and tag-team to get over the various obstacles in the race and for a moment they are even in the lead, but they eventually lose. In the race they defeat Darkwing. Airachnid is Sentinel Prime's spider-themed bodyguard who transforms into a Cybertronian VTOL jet. While Sentinel promises to reward them for boosting mining morale, an enraged Darkwing drags them to garbage incineration for upstaging him in the race, where they meet the eccentric B-127 (Keegan-Michael Key). B-127 was the only Cybertronian assigned to sub-level 50, even though most Cybertronian thought that there were only 40 sub-levels. Orion discovers a chip among the junk containing a distress message from Alpha Trion (Laurence Fishburne), one of the Primes. It seems that Trion was under attack, was asking for the High Guard to come to their assistance and gave the coordinates to their location, while asking for the Matrix to be protected. The coordinates are to a location on the surface, which is where Orion believes that the Primes died. Orion convinces D-16 and B-127 to travel with him to his coordinates on the surface. They plan to smuggle into the waste disposal trains that go all the way to the surface. They also persuade Elita to join when she catches them sneaking out of Iacon. They find Quintessons ships patrolling the surface of the planet. The ship was searching for life-forms, although the group cannot figure out what they are looking for. Eventually, they find a deactivated Trion in a cave alongside the corpses of the other Primes. Upon reactivation, he reveals that Sentinel betrayed the Primes to steal the Matrix, only for it to disappear due to Primus deeming him unworthy. Sentinel was not a Prime and only an aide. He lured the Primes to the surface with intelligence about a secret meeting of Quintesson commanders. The Primes came to eliminate the commanders but were ambushed. Sentinel killed them one-by-one. In truth, Sentinel has been giving Energon to Cybertron's enemies, the Quintessons, in exchange for letting him rule the planet while creating the miners by removing their cogs before activation. Trion gives the group the fallen Primes' cogs, allowing them to transform, and a chip carrying evidence of Sentinel's treason. Trion sends the group back to Iacon city to expose Sentinel. Sentinel's forces then arrive, capturing Trion and bringing him to Sentinel, who executes him. Orion transforms into a red and blue Cybertronian truck, D-16 into a silver Cybertronian tank, B-127 into a yellow Cybertronian car, and Elita-1 into a pink Cybertronian motorcycle. D-16 decides that he has been betrayed by Sentinel and vows never to follow a leader again. Evading their pursuers, the team travels back to Iacon but is captured on route by the Primes' former war-bots, the High Guard, who are rebelling against Sentinel. Starscream, their leader, reveals that the High Guard witnessed the betrayal of the Sentinel and since that day they have been fighting from the shadows to sabotage Sentinel. Starscream says that the idea of the united Cybertron is a myth. While D-16 takes command of the High Guard by defeating their leader, Starscream (Steve Buscemi), Orion is concerned by his friend's aggression since learning the truth. D-16 rallies the High Guard to follow him to Iacon and battle Sentinel. Sentinel's forces find them, and in the ensuing battle, the evidence chip is destroyed while D-16, B-127, and Starscream are captured, along with half the High Guard. Taken back to Iacon, D-16 is branded with the face of his idol, Megatronus Prime, after learning that Sentinel stole the latter's cog. Sentinel plans to present D-16 and the High Guard as traitors collaborating with the Quintessons and also the reason why Sentinel has not found the Matrix yet. Orion, encouraged by Elita, rallies the remaining High Guard members and returns to Iacon to rescue their comrades. Once there, Orion convinces the miners to revolt and frees the captives while Elita exposes Sentinel by broadcasting memory recordings of his lieutenant, Airachnid (Vanessa Liguori), throughout the city. D-16 subdues Sentinel but gets into an argument with Orion over whether to execute him. Orion says that the rebuilding of Cybertron cannot begin with an execution. This results in D-16 accidentally shooting Orion before ultimately letting his friend fall to his death. D-16 then bisects Sentinel, takes Megatronus' cog, renames himself Megatron, and starts a riot with the High Guard. Deeming Orion worthy, Primus and the spirits of the Primes bestow him with the Matrix, reviving him as Optimus Prime, who proceeds to defeat Megatron before exiling him alongside the High Guard. The Matrix then restores the miners' cogs and makes Energon flow again. Now Cybertron's new leader, Optimus christens his followers as Autobots and sends a message to the Quintessons, warning them to stay away. Meanwhile, Megatron reforms the High Guard into the Decepticons, using Megatronus' face as their insignia, and starts a rebellion against Optimus' leadership.
