Read more →After an orphan's arranged marriage to a blind heiress, he abandons her. His friend takes him hunting, where he falls off a cliff. Surviving months later, he returns to find his friend has assumed his identity and lives with his wife. Orphaned Sanjeev lives with his comically parsimonious paternal uncle, Maniram, who offers to look after him on the condition that a contested Last Will and Testament, will benefit him. When the Court rules otherwise, Maniram stops all support for Sanjeev, who then borrows money from his close friend, Sunil, to complete his education. Then Maniram arranges Sanjeev's marriage with a young woman named Gauri, the only daughter of millionaire Ram Prasad. Sanjeev agrees to this marriage, gets married, and thereafter leaves as he finds out that Gauri is blind. Maniram gets Sunil to convince Sanjeev to return to his wife, so Sunil and Sanjeev go on a hunting trip, where Sanjeev is attacked by an enraged elephant, thrown off a cliff, and believed to be dead. But he survives, and several months later, returns to Maniram's house, where, to his horror, he finds that Sunil has taken over his identity and is now living with Gauri. Read more →Balraj (Dharmendra), affectionately called Raj, by his elder brother (Nana Palsikar) and sister Vija (Madhumati), is a student in college in the arts semester. As the family is not very rich, Raj decides to move from the hostel to the residence of a family. He finds one such family in Gandhinagar, which consists of Choudhury Hukumat Rai (Ashok Kumar), a lawyer by profession, his wife (Nimmi), and only daughter Shanti (Mala Sinha). Hukumat takes an instant liking to Raj, and tells him that his wife will only allow him to take up residence if he tells her that he is already married. Raj reluctantly does so, and thus acquires residence with the Rai family. Eventually Mrs. Rai takes a liking to Raj, so does Shanti. Shanti finds out Raj and her dad had lied to the family about Raj's marital status, she confronts Raj, and he readily admits that he lied. Both fall in love. Mr. and Mrs. Rai are thrilled, when they come to know that Raj and Shanti are in love, and excitedly plan their marriage. As Raj's brother is critically ill, Raj has to return to his village. After several days when Raj returns to the Rai family, he refuses to marry Shanti on the ground that he is going to marry Gauri (Sandhya Roy). The Rai family is devastated. She keeps the identity of the father a secret. Narayan works as a laborer on the farmland owned by businessman, Ratan Kumar, in Ramnagar, who also has a rubber estate in Singapore. Although Narayan was an ex-convict, Ratan had assisted him getting a job, some land, and a small house where he now lives with his grown daughter, Gayetri, who used to work as a tutor/teacher. While bringing him his lunch one afternoon, Gayetri faints, and a woman tells him that she is pregnant. A shocked Narayan tries to find out who the father is, but Gayetri refuses to answer. He is all ready to beat the truth out, when Ratan intervenes, asks Narayan to take some money and re-locate, which Narayan gratefully does. They do re-locate and Gayetri gives birth to a baby boy, Narayan takes him to an orphanage donated by Ratan himself, and leaves him there, he returns home and lets Gayetri know that her child was still-born. Gayetri and Narayan eventually return to Ramnagar where Gayetri finds a job as a teacher in the very orphanage that her son (now named Shyam) lives in. When Ratan's son, Kamal, returns from Singapore, he meets with Shyam and likes him, but when he finds out that his school-teacher is Gayetri, he informs the Manager to fire her as she is not of good character. Balu (Sivaji Ganesan) and Velu (Gemini Ganesan) work in British Indian Air Force and are fighting with allied forces in World War II. Their plane crashes due to bombs dropped by Japanese. Velu is grievously injured. Balu carries him 50 miles to a village in Assam. There Velu regains consciousness and his health starts improving under the care of Indroma(Savithri) and her father, in whose house they are staying. Japanese soldiers come in search of these two. Balu hides Velu and when Japanese are about to discover Velu, he gives himself up to save Velu. Velu recovers, and marries Indroma, teaches her Tamil and calls her Indra. velu is found my members of British Indian army the day after his wedding and has to leave with them, leaving his wife behind. Indra is pregnant and gives birth to a child, however, their village is bombed and she loses her eyesight. When Velu comes in search of his wife, he only sees the ruins of the former village and grieves thinking his wife is dead and goes to Chennai to his maternal uncle. After 5 years, Balu, who had joined Indian National Army under Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose when Bose had come to Japan, is acquitted in a court and released in Delhi. There, in a refugee camp, he sees a blind Indra and her son and comes to know that Indra's father had just died. He promises Indra that he will help her find Velu and unite them. So, Balu takes Indra and her son and travels to Chennai. Indra's son starts calling Balu as appa in spite of Indra telling him not to. They find a place to stay in Chennai and the house owner promises Balu that he will help him get a job in his company. On going to his house owners office, Balu sees that the owner of that company is Velu. He gets very happy and goes to Velus's house,only to see that Velu has married his Maternal uncle's daughter Janaki(Sowcar Janaki), who has heart problems and has a son also. Also, Balu also comes to know that Velu thinks that Indra is dead. Balu does not tell him the truth fearing Janaki would not be alive on knowing the truth. Velu gives Balu a very high position in his company. Janaki's sister Saro( Saroja Devi) falls in love with Balu and Balu also reciprocates. Meanwhile, Velu sees Indra and her son in Balu's house and gets shocked. Balu then tells him the truth about Indra, her blindness and Velu's son and cautions him not to talk with her as it might cause both Janaki and Indra to die. Janaki comes to know that Balu has a son and Saro loves Balu. She thinks that Balu is a married person ashamed of his blind wife and hence trying to cheat her sister. She hates him and cautions Saro against him. Saro comes to Balu's house, sees Indra's son Babu, calling Balu as his father and thinks that Balu has cheated her. Indra, on hearing this comes to Velu's house to meet Saro and clear the confusion. Velu, however, on seeing his blind wife pleading for Balu's innocence cannot contain himself and tells the truth to everyone. Janaki on hearing that Indra is her husband's first wife, cannot take the shock and dies. She unites Balu and Saro before dying and apologizes to Balu for having suspected him and thanks him for all the sacrifices he has made for her husband and family.
